I feel strongly that Britain's premier Liberal Party is badly letting down this country. The leadership is focused on short-term electioneering (tax cuts, gimmicks, or pandering to particular groups). There are no extended arguments, no clear principles, few big ideas. It's deeply depressing.

Lots of talk of growth ahead of the Budget, as if it were a baroque puzzle. Our problem is basic. It's that we no longer support the things which facilitate growth: Europe, immigration, higher education, tax simplification, policy stability. These are all choices and could stop making them anytime.

The question for the Liberal Democrats is ultimately what their aim is - do they want to supplant the Tories? I don't think that's really a goer with our electorate unless the party got fully hijacked. Do they want to leverage their seat numbers in a Lab-Lib coalition, and then drive PR? Plausible

My favourite fact about Iceland is that we have many, many crime writers but only one forensic pathologist, and he was so busy answering all of their questions that he decided to have a small seminar for writers to get some peace. It immediately sold out so he had another one that also sold out.

not long now
April 4th, 1984. Last night to the flicks. All war films. One very good one of a ship full of refugees being bombed somewhere in the Mediterranean. Audience much amused by shots of a great huge fat man trying to swim away with a helicopter after him, first you saw him wallowing along in the water like a porpoise, then you saw him through the helicopters gunsights, then he was full of holes and the sea round him turned pink and he sank as suddenly as though the holes had let in the water, audience shouting with laughter
when he sank. then you saw a lifeboat full of children with a helicopter hovering over it. there was a middle-aged woman might have been a jewess sitting up in the bow with a little boy about three years old in her arms. little boy screaming with fright and hiding his head between her breasts as if he was trying to burrow right into her and the woman putting her arms round him and comforting him although she was
blue with fright herself, all the time covering him up as much as possible as if she thought her arms could keep the bullets off him. then the helicopter planted a 20 kilo bomb in among them terrific flash and the boat went all to matchwood. then there was a wonderful shot of a child’s arm going up up up right up into the air a helicopter with a camera in its nose must have followed it up and there was a lot of applause from
the party seats but a woman down in the prole part of the house suddenly started kicking up a fuss and shouting they didnt oughter of showed it not in front of kids they didnt it aint right not in front of kids it aint until the police turned her turned her out i dont suppose anything happened to her nobody cares what the proles say typical prole reaction they never..

I want the Prime Minister to look into a TV camera and say the RNLI are heroes, that we do not change policy by street violence in this country, and that he expects any criminal action to face the full force of the law. That's it. That's all he has to do.

Tax the 𝚛̶𝚒̶𝚌̶𝚑̶ middle classes. ✍️ www.linestotake.com/p/tax-middle...
Thank you, Captain Obvious. All the prime minister has to do is raise taxes on his own voters (the young and middle-aged, graduates and urban professionals, public sector workers) having inherited a manifesto commitment explicitly ruling out such a thing. Oh, and his priority is protecting said voters from the cost of living. Fair, but:

If the best time to raise broad-based taxes was autumn 2024 and the second best 2025, now is still third best. Raising income tax would be painful, but it would not only help to fund various bits of the state and a hybrid war against Russia, it would also represent a powerful sign to the bond markets that this government was serious about fiscal responsibility, something that may also lead to yields falling.

And none of this precludes extracting more money from the better off. You can do both! This was the principal error behind the mansion tax, a measure the OBR forecasts will raise a pitiful £400m a year by 2029-30. Instead, the policy should have been used as a lefty shield while simultaneously raising taxes on middle earners. It’s called doing politics.

Tl;dr the money is there. But it will require someone actually willing to:

1. Spend political capital and 2. Make the argument

A habit Britain’s politicians have rather lost.

The crew surrendered but they tried to be friendly, claiming that they were all Anglo-Saxons. Mann retorted that he was a Jew, ordered them to cut off their swastika badges and had them placed in the local prison. There they were made to clean a local building of faeces left by the occupying German forces.
