William H. Hays : Island Universe, 2013 Four-color reduction linoleum block print on 100% rag Stonehenge paper using oil-based archival inks. 23.5 × 31 cm | 9 × 12 in Private Collection.
Hays created this piece after a trip to Beach Meadows in Nova Scotia in 2013.

During a clear evening shortly after his wife's passing, a friend took him to watch the Perseid meteor shower. The view included a bright Milky Way, calm waves lapping at the shore, and a small island just off the coast, which inspired both the visual composition and the title.

Water demands nothing. It asks us to be honest—to listen to what arises, and to trust the current when life shifts its shape. Water reminds us that healing is not always loud. Sometimes, it is the slow return of feeling, the quiet cleansing, the deep breath taken after weeping.

As humanity stands on the precipice...perhaps it is only the deepest form of surrender and the spiritual empowerment and fearlessness that this can bring, which will enable us to make the right choice. Tangled Roots: Navigating the Complex Legacy of Early Quakers, p.83.
The image includes the quotation below, along with a picture of the "Tangled Roots" book cover:

As humanity stands on the precipice, facing what might well be the final and ultimate choice – between heaven and hell, peace and war, compassion and destruction, perhaps it is only the deepest form of surrender and the spiritual empowerment and fearlessness that this can bring, which will enable us to make the right choice. It seems clear that without this kind of fundamental transformation, humanity and most other species will not survive.

1/2 In his study of Socrates, Buddha, Kong Qiu, & Jesus, Karl Jaspers concludes that each of these innovators were possessed by the same insight, that our words are little shrunken things, tools unable to encompass the vast Life we are part.
