Anyway, as anyone knows who’s been paying attention, the UK’s relationship with the EU is highly correlated with the fortunes of Arsenal FC.

I do think people really need to start believing again that good things can happen - otherwise life is just one painful retreat after another.

A head(butt)y idiosyncratic mix of poor fiscal situation and trajectory plus looming short term political risk with the real (poll-wise) risk of a Melenchon / LePen tête a tête contest for the Presidency next year.

I was writing the section of my paper on the Syrian-Greek philosopher Damascius’ quest to find what comes before thought and his eureka-like discovery of the idea of potentiality in his blank writing tablet, and I immediately thought of Andy Burnham’s speech and the last 10 years of UK politics…

So agreeing with all of this, Burnham does appear to be going for it (to my surprise). He’s not in favour of the status quo…and by implication I think that also means status quo + (ie the so called reset)…

I would really really like to know how Burnham has gone from his no rejoin line (pretty much) during the by election to now everything is on the table. What has happened?

If Starmer manages to finagle a Made in Europe exemption as part of this new trajectory then it’s a very big case of GLWT for the Conservatives and Reform campaigning against it.

To expand on this, the inviolable specialness of the special relationship is the most durable and widely held establishment view in the UK — on a par with the royal family.

Developing on this from yesterday, since I see we're arguing about whether the UK would need to adopt the euro and join Schengen. Basically, during accession negotiations, joining countries get to ask for some special favours.

Not surprising in the least to anyone paying attention over the last few years (at least) to the overall direction of travel. That said , if I was Burnham I would be very wary about making a wholesale change *at this point*. Instead, I would look to generate some incremental optionality.

Here’s a question for you lot. Assume this is abstract. A relation — two or more relations = a relationship. The measure of that relationship is relatedness. How would you describe the change of relatedness?
