James Harvey @keepof4worlds.bsky.social · 23mI’d have no problem in it getting the subsidies if it could demonstrate its carbon neutrality and sustainability - what amazes me is the *repeated* demonstrations in audit after audit that it doesn’t do what it says on the tin, and continuing indifference from those subsidising it… 000
James Harvey @keepof4worlds.bsky.social · 37mAnd it is presumably Canada’s failure to do this properly that is Drax’s problem. 100
James Harvey @keepof4worlds.bsky.social · 46mI’d be interested to see if that is true. For example, Hampshire alone has over 13,000 Ha of derelict coppice which could (notionally, not economically) be put back into rotation. Coppice of course grows *much* faster than plantation forestry - 10 years would be fine. 100
James Harvey @keepof4worlds.bsky.social · 1hDrax’s problem is that it has repeatedly failed to demonstrate the sustainability of its wood supply, and appreciable proportions of this have come from old growth forest. Even this might still be carbon neutral (if the forest is allowed to regrow), but the ecological damage is enormous. 2/2 010
James Harvey @keepof4worlds.bsky.social · 1hA classic case of very muddled thinking. Drax ‘s problem is not its CO2 emissions - by definition wood is not a fossil fuel, and if power stations are fuelled by sustainably produced wood on a plantation or (even better) coppice rotation, you have a closed carbon cycle, powered by the sun 1/2 101
James Harvey @keepof4worlds.bsky.social · 1hNo, it’s classed as carbon neutral because it burns wood, not fossil fuels. DRAX’s problem is the sustainability of its wood supply, which has REPEATEDLY been shown to contain wood from cutting old growth forests. 100
James Harvey @keepof4worlds.bsky.social · 1hIt’s the logging of old growth forests that is the problem. 000
James Harvey @keepof4worlds.bsky.social · 1hBut Drax cannot demonstrate that its pellet production supply chain is sustainable - ie part of its Canadian supply comes from the clearance of old growth forest. Also when 10,000s of acres of British coppice have been allowed to overstand for a century. 2/2 000
James Harvey @keepof4worlds.bsky.social · 1hNo. Burning coal liberates fossil carbon into the environment. There is a net gain in CO2. If you burn wood from a rotating plantation or coppice cycle, the growing forest resource is consuming the CO2 produced. It’s a closed loop - you’re using the trees as a natural solar panel. 1/2 100
James Harvey @keepof4worlds.bsky.social · 1hThe problem isn’t that Drax burns wood and emits CO2 - sustainably grown wood (e.g. on a coppice cycle) is a closed carbon cycle and by definition is not a fossil fuel. DRAX’s problem is that it has REPEATEDLY failed to demonstrate sustainable sourcing. 000
