We've all seen Mel Brooks' reaction to The One Show. Imagine if he'd seen That's Life!

I think they should do this. But the entire show should just cover one 24 hour period, in real time.

Someone at work once asked me what my guilty pleasure was and I immediately shot back “pleasure never makes me feel guilty.” I’ve seldom felt cooler than I did in that moment. Literally one minute later I tripped on an extension cord and hit my head on a whiteboard in front of the entire office

At some point a people On Here adopted the position native to the post-CRM right that you could say astoundingly bigoted shit but as long as it didn’t have a Forbidden Word Of Power attached to it it was not only not bigotry but anyone cottoning on and condemning your bigotry was the REAL bigot

We need some kind of specific tax to pay for social care on an insurance basis. Maybe some kind of national system. Any ideas for how we brand it?

Is it reasonable to make a joke based on the assumption that posters on this site will recognise a reference to a quote from a 32 year old action movie?

I can't help but feel that some of this, at least, is driven by a reaction against the rise of disability (and in particular nurodivergance) as identity. While it helps to build community, help people share coping strategies and understanding it has also led to the rise of the toxic ND influencer

It would be fascinating* to hear why having a diagnosis and a non means tested, in work, benefit to help cope with it for the most severe cases would hold someone back. Most charitable explanation is that identifying as disabled could make some people think things are beyond them but...

It often feels after reading these essays and post-mortems like Labour's target voter is a functionally literate 55-year-old miner, living in a company cottage with an outside toilet. And somehow, nobody seems to have noticed that he died in 1983.

I think this is a distinction without a difference. If she thinks the presence of immigrants will harm her, that she fears (her perceived effects of) their presence, and that she therefore wants them discouraged, removed or treated harshly- then it's fair to say she functionally hates them

I suspect we're going to see the 2010s and post COVID 2020s as a bit of a golden age of certain types of disability accessibility. From "Of course you can do 90% of things online using assistive technology" to "let me see you hand write that in a room with me to check you're human"

I think the fix for this in the first instance will be restaurants taking non refundable deposits for all bookings. We're also likely to see much more requirements for id, so anti social behaviour like this can create, and link to something akin to a credit score/ Uber rating

I happen to also believe that diversity is a sign of an active and vibrant culture: different people coming together and exchanging ideas is what sparks new art, food, music, engineering, science... a culture that chooses to suppress this is a culture that is choosing to be moribund.

Jim Henson was born on this day in 1936.
Edward Hopper's 'Nighthawks', but the man and woman at the counter of the diner are now Fozzie and Miss Piggy. The guy with his back to us is now Bert, but Bert is being operated by Frank Oz, who is crouched down in front of the counter. The waiter/server is now Jim Henson who is looking intently at Kermit, and Kermit, who is occupying half of Jim's right arm, is looking intently at Jim. The diner is now called "JIMMYS".

Right. I'm chosing violence. If middle age is to mean anything then it should start when you're 1/3rd of your life expectancy and end when you're at 2/3rds So the average man in the UK reaches middle age between 26 and 27 and enters old age at 53.
