8. often, when people say LLMs "can do" something they mean LLMs can produce output that looks like the output of doing something 9. producing something that looks like the output of doing something is not the same thing as doing it

Imagine replacing people with tokens for plagiarism slot machines. This is why I take the extreme position that LLM-fuelled papers are not research, should not be read or cited, and should definitely count in one’s CV, but negatively.

"Please Don't Use AI for Reviews" -- by @ffassnacht.bsky.social (repost from LinkedIN)
This goes out to everyone but particularly also to early stage researchers:

Please do not use AI if you get invited for review papers for a scientific journal. There are several critical problems related to this: 1. It is not allowed to upload unpublished work to LMMs (copyright problems) 2. Be aware - editors will in 98% of the cases know that you used AI and it leaves a very bad impression on you 3. Be aware that editors would be perfectly capable to ask a LLM themselves if they would be interested AI's opinion. 4. An AI-review will force the editor to invite another reviewer and delay the process heavily. 5. Trust in your own capabilities - conducting reviews is actually also a good way to learn. Even a statement like "I cannot follow your thoughts in this section" may be helpful advice to the authors to improve their work. AI will not give such advice and is typically also not great at spotting problems in the experimental set-up.

So please - if you do not have the time to really review a manuscript or you are not capable of reviewing the manuscript adequately, just decline the invitation. Thanks!

I am taking a harder line on no LLMs for my gen chem class starting tomorrow. I will not be surveiling my students in any way, but I want them to know that my expectation is for them to not use LLMs in any way for my course. Would love to hear other #chemsky #chemchat folks approach!
6. Avoiding Generative AI
In this class, my expectation is that all of the work you submit (including homework) is done by YOU. Please do not use generative AI/ Language Learning Models for any assignment in my course. In return, I promise that I will never use LLMs/genAI as your instructor.

Some ways that you can avoid gen AI:

To avoid genAI in traditional google searches use https://udm14.com/Links to an external site.
Switch the default search on your computer/phone to DuckDuckGo instead of google.
(I personally pay $5 a month to use Kagi, but that is because I rely heavily on a functioning search engine.... https://kagi.com/Links to an external site.
More resources on how to avoid intrusive genAI for a variety of settings: https://www.librarian.net/notoai/Links to an external site.
ChemLibre is a great resource for chemistry content. Try searching their pages for additional support.
Come to office hours! Learning with human experts and peers >>> generative AI.

My goal is for you to learn how to think critically as a chemist. Currently, I see no value in LLMs for your education at this stage. To understand more where I am coming from :

What I’m trying to say—writing should be a human endeavor. There is no place for LLMs in ANY step of the process because these are tools that are built on theft of creative work. As scientists we should be rejecting the use of LLMs! We should be holding a higher standard because it’s right.

Research in a university context is teaching. You do it with students, one on one, or at least one with a small number. You mentor how to think deeply about solving problems that have never been solved. It is the PUREST form of teaching. The rest is, comparably, content delivery.

3D-Printed Multicolor Molecular Orbital Models for a Second-Semester Organic Chemistry Course
We have developed a set of multicolor 3D-printed molecular orbital models associated with topics taught in a second semester organic chemistry course at Pomona College. The set includes the following: (1) π molecular orbitals (MOs) in benzene; (2) water sp- and p-type lone pair orbitals; (3) valence bond and π-MO models of amide stability and reactivity; (4) formaldehyde (neutral, H+, and Li+ complexes) sp- and p-type lone pair and π/π* orbitals; (5) orbital interactions and the Bürgi–Dunitz angle in a cyanohydrin transition state; (6) acetaldehyde enolate π-MOs; (7) orbital interactions in an enolate alkylation transition state; (8) orbital interactions in a lithium enolate aldol transition state; (9) benzyne πHOMO and π*LUMO orbitals; (10) n−σ* orbital interaction in the water dimer intermolecular hydrogen bond; (11) peptide α-helix structure and n−σ* orbital interaction in an intramolecular i, i + 4 hydrogen bond; (12) anomeric effect (nO–σ*CO orbital interaction) in a carbohydrate model compound. The models provide insights regarding aspects of π molecular orbital theory, stability, reactivity, and mechanistic “arrow pushing”. A hobby-grade five-color 3D fused deposition modeling (FDM) printer is used to make the models, which are sized to provide compact take-home class handouts and kits for each student. The models are fabricated with orbital bisections and text annotations to enhance information content. Student perceptions of this set of 3D-printed molecular models and their use in the classroom are generally favorable. 3D Manufacturing Format (3MF) model files are available in the Supporting Information for this article.

it’s come to my attention that my tumblr post has been crossposted to bluesky, so I’m posting it on my account here #AntiAI #GenAI
recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

There’s a machine in the corner wrapped in human skin that makes things out of shit and blood to look like whatever you want (as long as you don’t look too closely).
