The midterm elections are just a few weeks away! Are you ready to make your voice heard? If you’re one of the millions of college students voting for the first time this year, it can be hard to know where to start. So we're answering some of UC students' FAQs about registering to vote. 🗳️
Colorful illustration with hands holding smartphones displaying the words "Be an Influencer" and "Vote." Text at the bottom asks, "Are you registered to vote?" Hearts and thumbs-up icons are scattered around.A graphic titled "Where do I start?" provides voting information. It states that in California, online voter registration takes roughly five minutes at registertovote.ca.gov. For other states, visit RocktheVote.org. The background includes playful geometric shapes. The image has a pink background with white text and colorful icons. It reads: "Am I allowed to vote? You need to be 18 years old by Election Day and a U.S. citizen (in addition to some other requirements). Not old enough this year? In California you can preregister at age 16 or 17. So when you turn 18, you’ll be set to vote." There are decorative icons like a music note, star, smiley face, and a check mark at the bottom.Blue background with colorful shapes. Text reads: "When do I need to register by? The day to register online in California is Oct. 19. After Oct. 19, California voters can register at county elections offices or use Same Day Registration on Election Day."

this is a great thread! I'll add more here on mandatory reporting: if you have a broad mandatory reporting policy (more than legally necessary) at your job, that is a workplace issue you can and should organize around with coworkers. mandatory reporting does a lot of harm and very little good.

The state of California did something similar to the latter with their campus victim advocates. They still worked on campus, but they couldn’t be hired and fired by the school anymore. The explicit goal was to allow advocates to do things like whistleblow.

This is a good list. The #1 biggest problem in Title IX is that there is no oversight and massive conflicts of interest. Schools can (and do) prioritize the institution over survivors, even when it requires breaking the law. Independent investigations would change that.

Wrote about how Trump’s tantrums over the Supreme Court reveal the not so hidden subtext of what Republicans expect from the justices. Also a mention of how Supreme Court politics resemble the Calciopoli scandal. (gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
As is nearly always the case with the president’s accusations, this was an illuminating projection. Trump fears that public pressure on the Supreme Court can sway the justices and how they rule. So when they don’t side with him, he assumes that’s what happened, and he trashes the Court in the hope that it will side with him the next time. He views criticism of the Supreme Court much as he views laws in general: When Trump or one of his allies wants to do something, such as use taxpayer dollars for cultish campaign ads, it’s legal. When his opponents want to do something, it’s illegal

And yet I've almost never heard this reality deployed to excuse women's behavior, and women are overall far less prone to violence than men, so the idea that PTSD explains abuse can take a hike. For me violence, outside self-defense, always begins with entitlement to harm/control others....

Officially about one in five American women has survived rape or attempted rape, but about five in five are impacted by violence against women in how, among other things, we have to think about in striving to avoid it. We avoid it by curtailing our liberty. The paragraph preceding the one above:
My friend Heather Smith remarked to me recently that young
women are urged to “never stop picturing their murder.” From
childhood onward, we were instructed to not do things—not go
here, not work there, not go out at this hour or talk to those people
or wear this dress or drink this drink or partake of adventure,
independence, solitude; refraining was the only form of safety of-
fered from the slaughter. During those years at the end of my teens
and the beginning of my twenties, I was constantly sexually ha-
rassed on the street and sometimes elsewhere, though harassed
doesn’t convey the menace that was often present. [screenshot from galleys]

Since PTSD is being invoked to excuse any and all abuse and misconduct, let us acknowledge where it is most common. .... From my book Recollections of My Nonexistence.
The former Marine David J. Morris, author of a book on post-
traumatic stress disorder, notes that the disorder is far more com-
mon and far more rarely addressed among rape survivors than
combat veterans. He wrote me, “The science on the subject is pretty
clear: according to the New England Journal of Medicine, rape is about
four times more likely to result in diagnosable PTSD than combat.
Think about that for a moment— being raped is four times more psy-
chologically disturbing than going off to a war and being shot at and
blown up. And because there are currently no enduring cultural nar-
ratives that allow women to look upon their survival as somehow he-
roic or honorable, the potential for enduring damage is even greater.”

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.
