Nova is a kinder and less prideful woman than I am, which is why I’ll add the thing she would never say: Every NHS manager who created this crisis must be punished and every patient who was made to wait a second longer than the 18 week “maximum waiting time” should be paid compensation 🔥

Two things can be true: 1) we can believe in & fight for a world in which anyone should have a path to redemption for even the most heinous shit and 2) you guys only seem to hum & haw over this shit when victims of sexual violence are tapping out their triggered feelings on social media.

that’s always the answer to a question like that imo, it’s true that the great authors of the past can tell us a lot about the big human questions of love and existence and so on but where they really stand to amaze you is in depicting the tiny, instantly recognizable gestures

or i’ll point to this ~80 year old shirley jackson story about two nice white ladies who get hooked on true crime
"I saw in the headlines," she said, "that they've found a new secret clue." She picked up her cigarette and puffed vigorously.
"Paula," she continued through the smoke,
"you know, I don't think it would do any harm if we went out later for a short constitutional, and just ran over to Gramercy Park for a minute to see what we could see-"

occasionally a student asks how some canonical book can possibly apply to their own life and moving forward i’ll refer them to the moment in Ulysses where bloom wants to leave a restaurant without eating there so he pretends to look around and realize he’s in the wrong place instead of just leaving

I wish that when you talked about a politics of love you would mean loving victims and not their abusers. I wish that we could afford more love to the victims than to their rapists. that, to me, would be real love.

I don’t know what restorative justice looks like in a case like this. I don’t know what it means to hold someone accountable. But I do know how painful it is to see someone admit to doing sexual violence against someone else and a crowd of people immediately rush to minimize it as a youthful mistake

I also believe in restorative justice but I don't think that means you get to become a pillar of a community and garner an audience and an income that relies solely on everyone including yourself staying silent about your actions. In the VIDEO GAME SPHERE no less.

I will never forget all the cynical gainsaying and disinformation about the strike on Al-Ahli hospital ten days into Israel’s destruction of Gaza. ‘Fog of war’. Almost three years later, fewer than half of Gaza’s hospitals remain even partially functional and there is no fog. Only dust and rubble.

survivors are also frequently encouraged to "speak out" and "start conversations" in order to "change the world" but we receive nothing but harrassment, suspicion, and hate for doing so. i grieve so often for the girl i was during MeToo who truly believed that things were soon to get better.

survivors of sexual violence are constantly asked to sacrifice our safety and wellbeing on the off chance that people who've committed literal torture might at some point have had a change of heart. when will our safety, wellbeing, dreams, aspirations, futures, or peace of mind matter?

shirley jackson you tell em www.newyorker.com/books/page-t...
ar and away the greatest menace to the writer—any writer, beginning or otherwise
—is the reader. The reader is, after all, a kind of silent partner in this whole business of writing, and a work of fiction is surely incomplete if it is never read. The reader is, in fact, the writer's only unrelenting, genuine enemy. He has everything on his side; all he has to do, after all, is shut his eyes, and any work of fiction becomes meaningless. Moreover, a reader has an advantage over a beginning writer in not being a beginning reader; before he takes up a story to read it, he can be presumed to have read everything from Shakespeare to Jack Kerouac. No matter whether he reads a story in manuscript as a great personal favor, or opens a magazine, or—kindest of all—goes into a bookstore and pays good money for a book, he is still an enemy to be defeated with any kind of dirty fighting that comes to the writer's mind.

feeling this hard -- i am so glad that there is an actual conversation that's taking place around cornell, and that survivors coming forward isn't being dismissed as 'woke 1' or whatever the fuck. and it's also hard to ignore that we've been here before, in the recent past, and nothing changed.

Reading, and writing, are holy. I love reading novels because they tell me something. They say: "this is what someone believed enough to dedicate months or years of their life to say." This is just as true for the trashiest pulp as it is for the highest literature.

The formatting of this Beckett quote does still represent resilience and determination, just of a very different sort.
A neon light art piece of Samuel Beckett's famous quote "I can't go on. I'll go on" but spaced - it would seem inadvertently- so that it reads "I can't goon. I'll goon".

casuals think of shirley jackson as a horror writer, and intermediate jackson-heads think of her as a suspense writer, but true fans know she was really, really funny (from a review of what sounds like it must’ve been a book of spells)
Who can tell what better world lies ahead, with John George Hohman leading the way-a world free from thieves, maledictions, lawsuits, and dropsy! A world where the cherries bloom on mulberry trees, and the good old-fashioned mother-fit has stolen off into the darkness! And in this clean new world, Hohman offers me, temptingly, the power “To Dye a Madder Red." I
entertain visions of the giddier whirl, the
more achingly poignant delight, the superlative, the madder red; or, possibly, the drab little madder, so quietly enduring its colorless web of days, suddenly transformed into a creature of glamour, vitality. I have dreamt of contacting herpetologist Dr. Ditmars, and bargaining with him for a few dozen (pecks? gallons? pounds?) of madders, in return for which I would dye his vampire bats or his ant colonies red, the madder red.

werner herzog on AI filmmaking (from here www.indiewire.com/features/int...)
Q: A couple years ago at IDFA, I saw this movie "About a Hero," which is this partly Al-generated hybrid documentary that tries to recreate the atmosphere of your films.

A: The intention of this young filmmaker was never to remake any [of my films], but making something in the spirit. And I immediately said, "You will fail. It is such a stupid idea. It's phenomenally, abysmally stupid. I will not take part in it." He wanted me to explain things and have my voice in it.
I said, "You are alone. There's such a thing as free speech, which I respect. So go ahead and fail." And it is a failure, period.
It's so standardized that Al can step in because there's not real storytelling. It's mimicry of something that has happened before. And I welcome Al to replace all the idiots who are into nothing but repeating, repeating, repeating until it's ad nauseam.
When it's ad nauseam, please, please, please let Al step in and do the job.

i think part of this is writers who can't meaningfully revise. something feels important to state explicitly early in a draft but then you complete the draft and your explicit explanation now reads like overkill. but if you don't know how to read your work structurally as a whole, you won't catch it

It’s about time we had a reckoning with the need so many writers feel to over-explain everything aspect of their stories, even in non Weird genres. Readers don’t need to be babied. Let us figure things out. Leave room for interpretation. Over-explanation makes writing worse.
