And this is exactly why I do not consider “accountability seeking” as a viable political project. It assumes, often patronizingly, that people just don’t know what they do or their interests or even what side they’re on until someone enlightened comes to gently show them “the way.”

What I’m saying is that there are a diversity of tactics to address different kinds of harm *appropriate to their context.* Accountability is a practice we can develop in trusted relationships. It cannot be the tool for challenging our enemies. It should not be a tool used to control our friends.

But I have also seen far, far too many instances of calls for “accountability” ultimately being leveraged to advance coercive control, usually of someone already socially marginalized. In viral online harassment campaigns, in intracommunity conflicts, and in abusive relationships.

“Accountability” is a personal practice and one I want to be able to ask for *and extend* in the close relationships of my life. Trying to “force” accountability is antithetical to that. I don’t use force and social coercion in my close relationships, certainly not when trying to find repair.

If someone is doing real damage and demonstrates a sustained lack of interest in accounting for it then, imo, the time for talking about “accountability” is over. Then it’s time for talking about how to best attack and undermine their power to do that damage. Changing their heart is not a factor.

I believe individuals can choose to assess the side they’ve taken, follow their curiosity, and allow that to change them. I think accountability is a personal practice, a vital one. You can ask someone to be accountable, but you can’t *make* anyone be accountable. It can only come from within.

Seeking “accountability” as a political goal does not appeal to me. Not on a macro or a micro scale. I don’t take responsibility for changing hearts or minds. And, too often, it seems to run cover for certain styles of intimate coercion. When my enemies make themselves I take them at their word.
