It's cool and awesome that every century or so we have to relearn the hard lessons about why we invented government because some dumb motherfuckers forget that the cornerstone of Civilization is a thousand boring little bureaucrats doing their job, not Great Men Being Violent.

Imagine if instead of regulating drone risks the normal way (which we did), we instead paid weird bloggers lots of money to worry about superintelligent dogs sprouting thumbs and using drones to kill us. This is pretty much how the US is approaching AI risks and regulations. My latest:

[some-subscribed-rss] New Post: Pluralistic: Preparing for a post-Trump internet (03 Sep 2026), by Cory Doctorow pluralistic.net/2026/09/03/broken-a…
Teaser:

What if post-Trump America is even worse? Cory Doctorow argues that Trump isn't the cause of American fascism—he’s just the ringleader of a coalition of corrupt, reckless true believers who hate each other but love power. When Trump inevitably exits, the infighting could unleash chaos far beyond anything we’ve seen. Big Tech has already fused with Trumpism, turning American digital infrastructure into a weapon that can brick entire countries. The only escape? A rapid, global push for a post-American internet built on open, sovereign digital public goods. But powerful people keep asking: “What if this makes Trump mad?” Doctorow’s answer is urgent and unsettling. Read on to understand why waiting is not an option.

Both the Economist and others suggest this study demonstrates that AI can help students. So I contacted the lead researcher to figure out how many. Answer: Out of ~26,000 kids, a total of 20. And five months after starting to use AI, only four continued to spend 65 minutes on homework. Four.
Graph of student exam scores correlated to homework completion time for to groups, students using AI and those that did not. There is a slight spike for studens using AI who also maintained extensive homework completion time. As described in post, the number of students falling into this bucket was 20 out of 26,000.

We’ve all got work to do

Well sure I work at the consent factory but in a different department than where they actually manufacture the consent. I’m on a whole other floor. They have a real strict firewall set up so it’s basically none of my concern. Same cafeteria yes but who’s really going to quibble with that. How many cafeterias do you expect a building to have? We’re all people and we gotta eat haha. Nevertheless every morning from the moment I walk through the revolving doors to when I scan my ID at the security desk I do a whole petulant teenager in the backseat on the way to church routine so anyone who might be watching knows that I don’t want to be there. That I don’t approve of what I do for a living. What they do I mean. Unless one of the guys from the prestige department is around then I straighten right up like daddy just got home. They’re in the same building too. Then I sit at my desk waving my hand in front of my face all day like someone farted while I’m busy at my work. Which is trying to change things from the inside by the way.

Applies to healthcare companies as well. "their intended policy is an attempt to set real violence against real people into motion by someone else's hands (usually cops but also doctors and landlords etc)..." www.welcometohellworld.com/they-will-ne...
The Supreme Court and politicians and their defenders think they should be able to start up the Rube Goldberg machine of pain then walk away and by the time the boot at the end kicks us all in the balls we'll forget who inserted the ball at the top. No! I saw you put the little silver ball in the thing! I saw you do it. It didn't just happen by magic it was a decision that was made by people.

Politics is making decisions that send people to suffer and to starve and to scrape by and to slowly but surely die. It might take a bit longer than other more reliable forms or killing but it is killing all the same. Almost every single utterance from a Republican (and plenty from Democrats) about their intended policy is an attempt to set real violence against real people into motion by someone else's hands (usually cops but also doctors and landlords etc) which is ok for some reason under the rules of the civility game.

That's what business AI-adoption has looked like to me. Management wants a magic button to increase output >2x while cutting staff by >50%. The actual (and few) AI success stories are all "expert in the field is also computer-savvy and built a custom harness for a fractional productivity increase."
The other question Suresh implicitly raises is, "How can you reconcile the failure of AI in the enterprise with the individual claims of skilled technologists who insist that AI is helping them do great work?" The answer is that these AI users are "centaurs" – experienced workers who are assisted by automation on terms that they set for themselves:

https://pluralistic.net/2025/09/11/vulgar-thatcherism/#there-is-an-alternative

Thanks to their skill and experience, these workers possess discernment, the ability to tell good code from bad, and (more importantly) good uses of code-generation tools from bad. They demonstrate the adage that worker-driven automation improves quality, while capital-driven automation improves throughput:

https://pluralistic.net/2026/07/28/hitl-ers/#ai-ai-ohAn automation technique that requires close supervision by skilled and experienced workers isn't going to be a raw productivity powerhouse. You don't "100x" your code this way, at least, not in the sense of firing 99 of your coders and having the remaining programmer pick up all their work. Rather, an automation tool that requires the continuous and conscientious exercise of discernment will let individual practitioners improve their work in extremely satisfying and useful ways. It's a way to spend more on operations in order to produce better outputs. It's not a way to cut your workforce, realize a gigantic savings, and still produce comparable goods and services at a far lower cost.
