Indeed. This has nothing to do with AI, this has to do with every nickel of wealth in SV being tied to a bad bet on a bunch of guys we know can't and won't deliver. You can't go wrong being against the hucksters.

I think a lot of people who think this way probably feel guilty about an encounter where they were bad with consent. And I don't say this to imply we should assume everyone talking like this is a rapist, but that we should probably talk about how widspread it is to be bad with consent

My hot take about the Jacob Geller/restorative justice discourse is that there is one person Geller needs to make amends towards above all others and anyone centering their feelings above the welfare of the central victim is, at best, being misguided by emotions.

The fact that there is a social stigma around being a vegan is frankly embarrassing for us as a society. At absolutely worst, veganism should be accepted as a perfectly valid lifestyle choice in a liberal society, and imo it should be seen much more positively than that

“how do we win back trump voters in 2026” we don’t. we create an environment where admitting to voting for trump is so socially embarrassing as to render them completely inert. you don’t “win back” trump voters. you demoralize them into staying home. you make it a dunce cap

Killed. NSF’s SBE was killed, in violation of law. The President does not have the power to choose to kill programs at a whim by defunding them. The imperial presidency was a mistake and we are in a separation of powers constitutional crisis.

Earlier this week, I agreed to interviews with two USA Today journalists. They wrote fantastic articles about the Cornell case that I'm proud to have been a part of. What I did not know is that their employer considers interviews to proprietary and opens up recordings to be used by any journalist.

Hey, I’m just asking questions. Ignorant questions, bigoted questions, questions that have been repeatedly answered for many years. Sorry, but I’m not listening to answers right now; I’m far too busy asking questions. It’s called being intellectually curious.

This is why folks should not waste time designing the perfect and optimized system of higher education and R&D investment. That’s unnecessary when an underinvested system is under attack. We should start by setting core guiding objectives and tripling the investment, and adjust as needed.

IT is quite possibly one of the worst books I've ever read entirely because it seems to have escaped the editor, something apparent in Rowling's books, especially 5-7, as well. So on that Bloom and I agree, but at least King is *capable* of writing good fiction.

Chester Christmas @imemptyplshalp.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
King is great at writing short horror stories because he is able to quickly come up with good premises that he can explore to exhaustion in 50-100 pages. The issue with his long fiction is that he takes those premises and then keeps writing for 500 more.

The Geller stuff has been very disappointing. I had found his essays thoughtful and empathetic, and now his career is likely over as it should. I think of his victim having this dragged into the public sphere risking her anonymity and peace, the many people he failed by omission. It just sucks.

your response to “I was raped” should not be “I was right”
4 panel comic

Panel 1:
A Purple Woman looks distraught, on the verge of breaking down. She says “that man raped me”
Orange Guy standing next to her is absent-mindedly checking his nails. He says “Wellll, I’ve always disliked him and his work.”

Panel 2:
Purple Woman begins to cry. Orange Guy adopts an incredibly smug expression and says “Guess I must just be a good judge of character”

Panel 3:
Purple Woman dissolves into sobs. Orange Guy notices, puts his hand on her shoulder and says “Aw”

Panel 4:
Purple Woman crumples to the floor. Orange Guy, looking bemused, asks “Are you crying because you’re jealous of how smart I am?”

This kind of stuff really shows how anti-trans sports bans and policies meant to segregate trans people really have nothing to do with "competitive advantage." All this trans girl wanted to do was run for homecoming queen. Like the students would still have to vote for her to even win!

I think about this interview with the distinguished philosopher Conan O'Brien a lot. I actually think this is a healthy way to live your life! www.nytimes.com/2019/01/14/a...
Is this how you want to go out, with a show that gets smaller and smaller until it’s gone?

Maybe that’s O.K. I think you have more of a problem with that than I do. [Laughs.] At this point in my career, I could go out with a grand, 21-gun salute, and climb into a rocket and the entire Supreme Court walks out and they jointly press a button, I’m shot up into the air and there’s an explosion and it’s orange and it spells, “Good night and God love.” In this culture? Two years later, it’s going to be, who’s Conan? This is going to sound grim, but eventually, all our graves go unattended.

You’re right, that does sound grim.

Sorry. Calvin Coolidge was a pretty popular president. I’ve been to his grave in Vermont. It has the presidential seal on it. Nobody was there. And by the way, I’m the only late-night host that has been to Calvin Coolidge’s grave. I think that’s what separates me from the other hosts.

I had a great conversation with Albert Brooks once. When I met him for the first time, I was kind of stammering. I said, you make movies, they live on forever. I just do these late-night shows, they get lost, they’re never seen again and who cares? And he looked at me and he said, [Albert Brooks voice] “What are you talking about? None of it matters.” None of it matters? “No, that’s the secret. In 1940, people said Clark Gable is the face of the 20th Century. Who [expletive] thinks about Clark Gable? It doesn’t matter. You’ll be forgotten. I’ll be forgotten. We’ll all be forgotten.” It’s so funny because you’d think that would depress me. I was walking on air after that.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”
