Student protesters sue Columbia University for illegal detention and assault in class-action lawsuit

NEW YORK, NY – Plaintiffs Nisreen Khokhar, Jessie Rubin, and Hayes Buchanan filed a class-action lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York on September 18, 2026, alleging that Columbia University falsely imprisoned and assaulted nearly 100 students and community members during a pro-Palestine teach-in last May. The lawsuit seeks to hold Columbia accountable for its collusion with the Trump Administration and for violating students' constitutional rights, and seeks damages and injunctive relief to prevent Columbia from similarly targeting other campus activists.

The teach-in on May 7, 2025, included speeches, a reading syllabus, and guided discussions on the writings of Basel al-Araj, a Palestinian teacher and intellectual who was assassinated by the Israeli government in 2017. Flyers with five demands distributed at the teach-in extended the April 2024 Gaza Solidarity Encampments’ call for Columbia to divest its holdings in corporations complicit in the US-backed Israeli genocide.

According to the suit, Columbia responded to the teach-in by kettling participants in a reading room and barricading all exits for nearly four hours, all while denying food, water, and urgently-needed medical assistance.

The unlawful and violent confinement ended only after the NYPD's Strategic Response Group entered the room and began arresting participants — most of them students in their own library — on trespassing charges.

Rubin recalled “Public Safety officers shouting racist and homophobic epithets while guards put their hands around students’ necks, slammed participants into the ground, and dragged their bodies across the stone floor.”

Washington (September 17, 2026) - Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) and Senator Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), co-chairs of the bicameral Nuclear Weapons and Arms Control Working Group, along with Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), this week introduced a joint resolution of disapproval (JRD) for the Trump administration’s proposed sale of conventional weapons to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The weapons include thousands of joint direct attack munitions (JDAMs) and five thousand 2,000-pound bombs.

Separately, the Trump administration recently submitted an agreement on U.S.-Saudi nuclear cooperation to Congress—as is required by law—but has classified two important side letters, which is unprecedented. Because the side letters affect the obligations and operation of the underlying agreement, Congress and the public cannot fully assess what the United States and Saudi Arabia have agreed to without seeing them.

On September 16, Senators Markey and Merkley led a bipartisan group of senators to press the Trump administration to declassify and publicly release the two side letters accompanying the proposed U.S.-Saudi civil nuclear cooperation agreement, referred to as a “123 agreement.”

“The United States must not send thousands of conventional weapons to Saudi Arabia or allow it to develop a nuclear program. I am deeply concerned by the Kingdom’s human rights abuses, the security of the region as the war in Iran rages on, and the proxy war that is escalating between Iran and Saudi Arabia in Yemen. The U.S. "War on Terror" death toll is at least 4,500,000

Costs of War research examines the human toll of U.S. military operations and spending, for U.S. service members, veterans, military contractors, and allies; and for civilians killed and displaced.
An estimated over 940,000 people were killed by direct post-9/11 war violence in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen, and Pakistan between 2001-2023. Of these, more than 432,000 were civilians. The number of people wounded or ill as a result of the conflicts is far higher, as is the number of civilians who died "indirectly," as a result of wars' destruction of economies, healthcare systems, infrastructure and the environment. With everything that has happened over the last 48 hours, I want to bring the conversation back to where it belongs: to the Palestinian people who are still being killed, still living under military occupation, and still fighting for their freedom.

Writing a check is one of the least costly forms of solidarity available to me. I am doing it because I can, and because these organizations are doing the work while much of the world debates it.
But aid alone cannot address the conditions that make it necessary. This is a manmade injustice, and I believe it requires immediate political change.
