look, if you're worried about being remembered, don't try to pursue immortality or whatever, the smart move is to start selling substandard copper and then make sure anyone who complains deposits a physical copy of that complaint in a site that will later be archaeologically significant

I talk about this a lot in "Lost Worlds" - the world didn't begin with people alive today, and it won't end with people today. Apocalypticism is a wonderful way of making it so you don't have to think about the real long-term consequences of your actions. If it's all going to end, why think further?

The thing about the florid apocalypticism you sometimes encounter on this site is that a lot of people are less horrified by literal civilizational collapse than by the notion that our descendents are just going to keep muddling through and in less than a century nobody will remember us.

Left-NIMBYs love to pit welfare state expansion against land use reform, but the latter can 1) can achieve significant poverty reductions 2) without means testing or administrative burdens, and 3) at a net gain for the public budget, which can then be used to expand the welfare state.

right, yes. one of the basic problems is that they think that thinking about something really hard is a type of sampling, and that you actually don't need to sample anything to get information, and that there is no difference between thinking about something and doing it.

PRIMETIME is really very good, falls just short of being genuinely great. I think there are individual scenes that could have benefitted from a little more visual restraint, but the overall effect was gripping and sticks to your brain for a while afterward. Incredible cast.

The cynicism and chutzpah of Marin County NIMBYs never fails to take my breath away www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/arti...
Opponents call the unofficial area East Mill Valley. It is home to all six of the city’s existing income-restricted developments. Though less wealthy and white than Mill Valley’s west-side neighborhoods, it remains affluent by regional standards, with a median household income of about $147,000, a median home price of about $1.5 million and a non-Hispanic white population share of about 65%.

“We are in favor of affordable housing,” said Gary Batroff, president of Friends of Hauke Park, which includes hundreds of members, many of whom live in the Enchanted Knolls neighborhood that overlooks the proposed site. “But if the point is to be inclusive, where do you want to include people? Do you want to include them on the edge of a park, on the edge of town? Or do you want to put them on a main street?”
