INTRODUCTION

The equities here could not be more one-sided. Defendants admit that they
provide a service without fully knowing how it works.

This is not just any service. It is one that Defendants themselves concede poses an existential risk to the continued
survival of humankind.

Defendants claim they cannot stop barreling forward with their potentially civilization-ending endeavors unless they are forced to do so by the
government. They have asked the government to tie them to the mast.

Plaintiff brings good news to the Defendants: The Florida Attorney General is answering your
cry for help with a motion to enjoin you from harming Floridians with your reckless, unacceptably risky product.

the chump theory paper is in analytic philosophy-speak, so here's a try to sum up the basic points without all the philosophy inside baseball: when there's a fact that people are trying to make controversial, they often point to reason-shaped things that aren't reasons, if you're well informed.

Not sure it’s tenable if, going forward, every president knows that so long as they have firm control over DOJ, enough loyal senators to avoid removal, and are willing to issue blanket pardons on the way out, they can break any law they please while in office.

This and the math thing in a way are good news. At the end of the day, LLMs and all their harnesses and bells and whistles still can't go beyond the distribution. They are great if you want to get to the mean. If you are out of the distribution, they can't replace you. They won't even know you.

I think I just gave a kid his first exposure to puns. I’m a preschool teacher and while the kids were playing in the sand box one pretended to cook some food for me.

3 year old: “Here. It’s food. Uh… sand food”

Me: “like a sandwich?”

And then he got super serious and just stared at the ground for a long time. I thought he didn’t get it but then in the most dead serious three year old voice he went “that’s. really. funny.” and the rest of recess every so often I would hear him whisper “sandwich” to himself in awe.

This is in some ways at the heart of our political dysfunction. For a lot of folks, so long as the basic civic infrastructure keeps (kept?) humming along, they don’t feel much personal effect from electoral politics, so it becomes a kind of entertainment & mode of self-expression.

As an aside, a legal solution that @surcomplicated.bsky.social is fond of, which I think is very unlikely, but offers a potential rout to this outcome, is post-Trump to declare retroactively that Trump was ineligible under the 14th amendment and so was never legally president a second time.

One of the things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book or for another book; give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.
