Our report from June explains how the replacement for the triple lock will work (we called it a 'smoothed' triple lock). It's a much better policy than the current triple lock - State Pension is protected from inflation spikes and tracks earnings long term, but the expensive ratchet is removed.

The triple lock announcement today is essentially a shift to a long-run link to earnings. But with a minimum of inflation or 2.5% in any given year. Most importantly that removes the permanent ratchet above earnings.

The volatility of triple lock meant forecasts of costs were often wrong&so estimates of the savings are also uncertain. However, based on typical variation in the economy, TL tends to increase the pension bill by around £5 billion annually after five years, but by £15 billion after ten years.

Luxury retailers want taxpayers to fund a 20% tax break for foreign tourists. They paid consultancy Cebr to claim this will raise £2.6bn for the UK. That convinced Sadiq Khan and Kemi Badenoch. But it's false: a free lunch. Four basic errors mask a £600m loss. Thread:

My youngest was chucking a ball around recently, a glass got broken, and he vehemently objected to the idea that *he* had broken it. We explained that in fact he was responsible - that’s how it works. If a 12yo can grasp this, am not sure why a purported genius apparently can’t.

I'm not saying this to downplay fiscal concerns - I think they're damned serious right now, and the way higher rates are out of our control (driven by US etc rates) amplifies this. But all this micro strategizing about the exact quantum of headroom sometimes misses the sheer unavoidable randomness
