Trade bodies lobbying against regulation to green their industry is a feature not a flaw. SMMT end up representing the industry of the past at inflection points like this, but it's still not easy for govt to ignore their calls to slow down...so they should design policy that exposes the laggards...

I am fascinated to see what agreement the EU and Canada (and maybe now Australia) come to on food and farming standards. After years of dispute does the safe haven EU provides mean those countries wanting to get closer see the benefit of aligning?

Comparing organic and conventional farming is redundant. We know producing same food with zero chemical pesticide or fertilizers or hormones would need more land and worsen the environment impact! Useful comparison would be regen farming of plant rich diet with conventional farming of current diet.

All the focus on displacing the bit of gas we import that is more carbon intensive than the UKs, that is the 20% of what we use, rather on driving down demand so we don't need to use it at all, is angel on the head of a pin stuff. More production is not a solution it is just a distraction.

Great summary of Labour's electoral calculation. I'd add - 'jobs vs climate action' is really 'jobs that won't be around for long vs jobs that will' and salience is a bad metric for a 25 year transition, what matters is support for climate action and knowing that it helps economy, health, security.

To take this further and make it less fun...as some coastal areas get more flood and winter storm surge, this could take up homes that need to be re-zoned summer use only. Food security will be shooting up government agendas - and trade policy should be part of that - but this approach, which is trade without any sustainability criteria, will not support the climate and nature friendly farmers we need to protect soils, water supplies and forests.

My favorite response to 'let's just adapt' is 'What do you want to adapt to - 2, 3 or 4 degrees?'. And, 'mitigating is adapting - healthy forests and regen farming make us resilient, heat pumps are most efficient source of ac, renewables work when gas, coal and nuclear's cooling systems overheat
