Our report from June explains how the replacement for the triple lock will work (we called it a 'smoothed' triple lock). It's a much better policy than the current triple lock - State Pension is protected from inflation spikes and tracks earnings long term, but the expensive ratchet is removed.

Really important analysis from Stephen finding 90% of the 2024 Local Housing Allowance increase remained with tenants rather than passing through to landlords. The idea that an increase would drive up rents has been a key sticking point in the government ending the freeze.

A key task for the Pensions Commission should be to say what the right State Pension level is in relation to earnings and set out how to end the triple lock once that's reached. Our view is that we're there already. New spotlight out this morning, and see Ruth's thread for a summary.

Some thoughts on the interim Milburn report. Overall it's encouraging to see how well it recognises the drivers of the NEETs crisis, but the overarching focus on work risks obscuring vocational education in particular as a key pathway out of NEET status

How has the Budget impacted living standards? The distributional impact of all tax/benefit changes since Autumn Budget 2024 is progressive:poorer households gain from 2-child limit repeal and UC boost, while richer households lose from threshold freezes and new property, dividend and savings taxes

Local Housing Allowance rates have been realigned to market rents in just two of the last 13 years. Current Government policy is for them to remain frozen . This risks a record 'affordability gap' opening between LHA rates and the 30th percentile of local rents. ➡️ buff.ly/gJR1hmO
Chart showing percentage gap between LHA rates and the estimated 30th percentile rent level since April 2012: Great Britain
In April 2011, LHA was pegged to the 30th percentile (meaning that 30 per cent of privately rented properties in the BRMA are charged rent at or below the LHA rate) and a year later, the process of automatically linking LHA to market rents ended. Since then, LHA rates have been frozen in eight of the last 13 years and current Government policy, reflected in the official forecasts, is for them to remain frozen for another four years.

New Universal Credit statistics today show the % of claimants in the ‘no work requirements’ conditionality group has continued to rise to 49%, and the proportion in work has fallen to 33%.
