Biomedical scientists - a reminder that NIH proposes to "improve" peer review by hiding impact scores from Program Officers and applicants, and binning applications into broad categories of "Most competitive,""Competitive," or "Not discussed." Please provide feedback before the October 13 deadline!

NIH is proposing changes to how grant scores are reported, replacing individual scores & percentiles with three broad categories. What could that mean for researchers deciding whether to revise and resubmit? Comments due Oct 13. www.ascb.org/science-policy/nih-cha…

Do. not. like. My interpretation is that based on the highlighted part in the attached screenshot, there will be no functional difference between a grant that scored in the 1st percentile vs 24th percentile? And likewise for 26th vs 49th? Guess the "grant lottery" folks might get their wish?

What a great article not only on faculty workloads, but how little our salaries actually factor in to most university budgets. A few highlights. First, our salaries are falling:
Third, faculty salaries are falling even if we statistically control for faculty rank and institution. By our analysis of National Center for Education Statistics data, tenured and tenure-track salaries are down 10 percent in real terms since 2016 and are lower today than they were in 2002; nontenured faculty salaries are down 4 percent since 2016 and are at 2002 levels today.

To put this plainly: Suppose sharply increased teaching loads enabled institutions to cut one out of every seven full-time faculty. (That’s roughly what we saw last year in severe cuts announced at West Virginia, Western Illinois, and St. Cloud State Universities.) The associated savings in salary and benefits even through such drastic action would amount to less than 2.5 percent of total institutional expenditures for the typical university.

The upshot? If you think higher education has a cost problem, squeezing more teaching out of faculty is not the first place you should look.

Does PRC2 interact with RNA or is it an artefact? See our preprint showing how stringent denaturing purifications with spike-in controls support direct interaction between PRC2 and RNA in cells. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
UV-crosslinked human cells containing Halo-tagged EZH2 were mixed with crosslinked mouse cells in which the protein was untagged and human EZH2 purified with Halo resin. Enrichment of human RNA (left) or mouse RNA (right) versus input was plotted against RNA abundance in the paired input sample. Windows with significant enrichment (p <10−6; binomial test) are shown in red. Human RNAs show enrichment versus input whereas mouse RNAs do not.
