If you ever wondered why visible light is those particular wavelengths, it's because life evolved to see in the narrow range where water is transparent

An enormous Hatzegopteryx pterosaur stands in the rain on all fours, its head a mass of turkey-like wrinkles around a wicked, machete-shaped beak. It turns a cold, considering eye on you. Two others approach through the mist. Art by Stieven Van Der Poorten for HOW TO SURVIVE PREHISTORY

A new study of the Indus Valley city of Mohenjo-daro (c. 2600–1900 BCE) indicates that egalitarian structures increased there with the expansion of the city. Perhaps urbanism doesn’t always conjure inequality? Really wish that David Graeber was still here to read this.

I used to have a bit arguing that if Plantinga is right that naturally evolved belief-forming mechanisms can't yield knowledge then the only creatures with knowledge are dogs, who have been selectively bred — intelligently designed, if you will — to have various knowledge-yielding faculties

Fiebertraum. Der Medienmanager Zeiler ist kein Experte für… Medien. (Aber für Sonntagsöffnung, Wirtschaft!, Wiener Schulen, Privatspitäler) Klassenkampf schlecht. Ich bin Klassenkämpfer. Was?

Zeiler: Ich bin kein Experte in diesem Bereich.

Reading LotR again, and one thing that strikes me is that it's a kind of post-apocalyptic setting. That's obvious in Eriador, but holds also in Moria, Osgiliath, Fangorn, and so many other places. On some level it's a story about re-building a world that never managed to move on from catastrophy.

Reading James Scott's "Seeing like a State" right now, and it's such a weird book. Honestly, I don't quite see why it's so well received. The case studies seem too similar to each other to offer a convincing ground for arguments, especially since the conclusion are rather sweeping

It's a pretty good bit in the Hippias when Socrates makes up an annoying "friend" who won't stop questioning him, to then have Hippias help him with his own defence. Just a solid joke that still works over 2000 years later.

My favourite conclusion to a #philosophy paper, by Bill Lycan:

13.10. Conclusions
I can draw hardly any. My main thesis remains, that it is hard to see what could establish a claim as to what vision does or does not represent. Another thing that remains is the possibility that the question is a bad one. All this, I fear, is grist to the mill of the skeptics who deny that vision represents in the first place. I probably should not have written this chapter.
