why does "oops I did it again" have a magical realist spoken interlude in which a guy gives Britney the necklace from the movie Titanic as she's boarding an old-timey train, and Britney references the events of the film as if they're both real and fictional

people that are extremely conservative about this question seem to basically pick out the "sopping wet pink stuff" by fiat, and the people who are extremely liberal seem to have no way of hitting the breaks before attributing awareness to the platonic existence of a great behavioral look-up table

Sometimes the problem is the tech. Robust government regulations and a strong union culture are never going to make nuclear weapons good. AI is probably more along those lines.

Searle's "Minds, Brains, and Programs" is a bad paper but teaching it this semester did suggest to me a good way of framing debates about whether computers can think: do you think thinking is a biological process like lactation (Searle's example), or a biological process like reproduction?

while I agree that it's not clear why the brain is the only possible medium, it's also not obvious that it isn't. people have accused functionalism of being dualist bc it divorces mental properties from physical properties!

one skepticism i have right now with the sort of AI agents that are supposed to automate regular-person everyday tasks is that most of the info i can think of that might be useful to aggregate is pretty strictly siloed for good reasons (medical stuff, school stuff, financial stuff, etc)

tangential to Janelle’s point, but it drives me crazy how people will bring social trust and cohesion up as some sort of more sophisticated concern. the only reason there’s a problem with trust & cohesion in a multiracial society is bc people are racist!

someone who knows the stock market better than I do: isn't this basically an accounting identity? if traders are buying a lot of stocks in one area of the economy they're going to pay for that by selling off other stocks, which is going to tend to lower the value of those other stocks, right?

this is definitely out of my area of expertise but i'm not sure this is a very useful exercise? equities are speculative; taking out the tickers that people are betting on will indeed show you a picture of the lonely casino tables. for a snapshot of the economy, use their financials

yeah i've been sorta struck by this too. sometimes it's hard to avoid the sense that some people like connectionist models of cognition more than classical models because it sorta looks more 'brain-y'. but ANNs are literally quite different from brains

it's like when casinos get mad about card-counting
The operators did not break our encryption, compromise a database, or gain direct access to stored user conversations. Instead, they manipulated model interactions so that protected reasoning could be reproduced in forms visible to the requester in a coordinated, scaled manner that violated our terms of service. This manipulation is not a vulnerability unique to OpenAI’s models, and we have shared information about it with industry partners through the Frontier Model Forum in order to strengthen collective defenses against adversarial distillation.

suspect what's happening here is that outside of academic work, if someone is referencing a manuscript it probably *is* bc they consider it especially important and so they plump it this way, or they just think that language makes their writing sound more exciting

people defend the way IvR, EMB, etc. engage on here on the grounds that it's justified by the need to fight AI hype, but if that's the goal then their strategy is terrible. you aren't going to defeat AI hype by curating a smaller and smaller circle of people who already agree with you

For all of the bluster about leftist egalitarian professors, it only takes someone below their station questioning their takes once (often in a very normal and not-aggressive way) to bring out the "how DARE a lowborn such as you speak to me in such a way"

One very fun (and funny) thing about academic social media in particular is you have very professionally successful people who are used to literally everyone deferring to them posting stuff here, and then a grad student is like "lol no." And without fail, those people absolutely freak the fuck out

it's kind of weird when your defense of art against AI involves the premise that there's no difference in value between good art and bad art (ftr I don't think literary value lines up with genre in the way JCO suggests)

What the fuck, Joyce. I don't even read romance novels but this kind of thinking pisses me the fuck off. It further pushes that mentality that some books as "lesser" which is bullshit! All books count! 1/3

This is why Al-generated romance novels make perfect sense. Formulaic fiction doesn't need to be written by hand, so to speak; what difference does it make if a machine "writes" it? There are machine-made clothes & there are custom-made clothes. They appeal to different consumers.
