Ich glaube, ich wäre so eingeschüchtert, wenn ich eine so versierte Übersetzerin nochmal übersetzen müsste. Und gab es eine Stelle, die besonders schwierig war? 160

It certainly criticizes "Don't look up", basically saying that it's just another unhelpful reaction to the mess we live in. But one of it's core tenets seems to be that passions are deeply cognitive, and that one can accordingly affect them by just having the proper beliefs. Moral Feelinx @feldanow.bsky.social · 23/09/2026Apart from the fact that you explicitly said that there are only two options, there is also the point that philosophy is often exactly about what's implied by certain claims. So when you make certain statements, philosophers will point out what this commits you to. That's just what philosophy does 070

Moral Feelinx @feldanow.bsky.social · 21/09/2026On some weird level, it makes sense. Preppers want to live in a world in which they have no obligations towards anybody, but can thoughtlessly fight for their survival. What they got instead is a world in which empathy and solidarity matter. It's the opposite of what they want the apocalypse to be. 1301
Moral Feelinx @feldanow.bsky.social · 21/09/2026Ok, last post in this thread, but I think very good introductory readings on these points would be: Blackburn "Spreading the word" and Putnam "The Meaning of Meaning". Both give a very good first overview of what's at stake in these debates, and how to engage with them. 010
Moral Feelinx @feldanow.bsky.social · 21/09/2026In a more formal way, one could say that LLMs seem to lack an understanding of semantics, where this is framed in terms of what sentences are about (that's very simplified of course). And one way one notices that is that LLMs don't seem to stay consistent in the "world" they describe in "speaking" 100
Moral Feelinx @feldanow.bsky.social · 21/09/2026A good candidate for x is whatever make "Aboutness" of thoughts possible, i.e. that thought are more or less responsive to facts out there in the world. (Not always, not perfect, but often enough.) That's something that LLMs seem to lack. But how does human thinking accomplish Aboutness? Beats me. 100
Moral Feelinx @feldanow.bsky.social · 21/09/2026There is no reason to declare x to be a "soul", because that overburdens the proponents of this view with a concept they might not embrace, i.e. a "soul". And there can be reasonable disagreement about what x exactly is, while there can be broad agreement that it is there, and what it ought to do. 100
Moral Feelinx @feldanow.bsky.social · 21/09/2026What do you mean, it seems fairly easy: 3) “thinking” and “understanding” require some thing x, which we have and they do not. 100

Moral Feelinx @feldanow.bsky.social · 15/09/2026Reading LotR again, and one thing that strikes me is that it's a kind of post-apocalyptic setting. That's obvious in Eriador, but holds also in Moria, Osgiliath, Fangorn, and so many other places. On some level it's a story about re-building a world that never managed to move on from catastrophy. 000
Moral Feelinx @feldanow.bsky.social · 15/09/2026In my hopeful moments, I believe so, too! But then again, I also believe that climate change is a uniquely new problem. Also, it would still be depressing if the 2010s where a peak not forever, but for the next 200 years, or so. Like a modern Bronze Age collapse (or a stumble). 020
Moral Feelinx @feldanow.bsky.social · 15/09/2026I agree, but sometimes I worry that we are just going back to a living standard more akin to the 1970s or so. Which, given that much of the past was so terrible in so many ways, would be devastating. Like, maybe the 2010s will be the highest living standard humanity ever achieved. How depressing! 220

Moral Feelinx @feldanow.bsky.social · 09/09/2026On the flip-side, the GDR's army was full of former Nazi officers from the start.
