Ultimately the prequisite is 'are pro-Europeans on the British right as, or more, powerful than pro-Europeans on the British left in 1972?' and 'what are attitudes towards free movement' and literally everything else is just noise.

exactly. That is why the poll above is so dumb, frankly. If we get to the point of a Rejoin vote at all, euro membership won't be a substantive issue. Nor would Schengen (and I would bet 90% of respondents don't know what it is). Free movement is the issue..

If you're in my GP's office any time soon, prepare yourself for what many are calling the greatest mnemonic of all time. Come for E and P, but sit down and clap for I.
A screen in my GP's office advertising a mnemonic of signs to spot SEPSIS.

S slurred speech of confusion
E extreme shivering or muscle pain
P passing no urine all day
S severe breathlessness
I ot feels like you are going to die

"second term issue" is classic Labour caution speak for "never". But unfortunately... all manner of domestic issues from manufacturing to immigration have an EU dimension. And this government is discovering what previous ones did, that there's no special deals.

Don’t know whether you’ve seen this? Burnham really isn’t a traditional tax and spend Labour politician with better Tik Toks but someone with a (not entirely developed) alternative theory of politics and power, who has a tendency to say things without always thinking through the consequences.

Thanks to the "legitimate concerns" paradigm, we have a national consensus that migrants (you know which specific ones) are a problem. More migrants = bad, fewer migrants = good. In that context, "anti-migrant protestor" isn't even neutral language to describe this fascist thug. It is *positive*.

fairly simple hypotheticals which quickly lead to a dark place, what if: - your man "Tommo" had intercepted that dinghy before the RNLI? - the police hadn't been there to hold back the crowds in Gosport/Portsmouth? - the mob in that hotel had actually found "migrants"?

I'm very likely wrong but I am yet to see the Greens make even the vaguest attempt to try and sell the benefits of immigration to the electorate or speak up for the dignity of Asylum seekers when those two things would win them votes

If you want a vision of the kind of immigration policy people like this want, picture the pernicious, vindictive rhetoric of ‘common sense, simple as’ tooled for a passive climate genocide. “Don’t like drowning? Don’t go in our water.”

Will keep boringly saying this (no disrespect to OP): it's not a health surcharge. It's not hypothecated to the NHS; you can't choose not to pay it and thereby eschew healthcare. You could equally call it an education or roads surcharge. It's using the NHS's sanctified status to rip off immigrants.

Wide shot of the BRITISH MUSEUM. There are suggestions of fascism around the streets - tanks, barricades, an Orwellian 'Big Brother'-style poster on a wall. A voice of a TOUR GUIDE emanates from the museum:

TOUR GUIDE:
So the Tapestry tells acrucial chapter of our nation's history...

2
[Cut to interior of museum. A long Bayeaux-style TAPESTRY is on display, and the Tour Guide is speaking to a tour group]

TOUR GUIDE [smiling]:
How modern fascist Britain was created.

3
TOUR GUIDE:
The Tapestry begins here with the 2008 Crash, then austerity, then the AI Crash...

4
TOUR GUIDE:
...and by the end of the room it's just full-on fash.

5
CHILD IN TOUR GROUP [gesturing to the tapestry]:
What's this middle bit?

TOUR GUIDE:
This is the 2026 Battle of Legitimate Concerns

6
TOUR GUIDE:
[show a reporter standing next to the Dover protests]
Here's the media saying the government have got to do something about the legitimate concerns...

7
CHILD:
...About the failure of capitalism?

TOUR GUIDE:
No about brown people on boats

8
CHILD:
[pointing at boats crossing the sea on the tapestry]
Are these boats the mega-dinghies?

TOUR GUIDE:
Not all of them

9
[we see one of the boats is a giant yacht]
TOUR GUIDE:
That one's a superyacht,
carrying money from the American fascists to the British ones.

10
TOUR GUIDE:
You see really it's as much a story of convergence as it is of conflict.

[An alarm sounds in the museum]
DING DING DING DING

11
TOUR GUIDE:
Ok, tour over everyone

12
TOUR GUIDE:
It's time for the Two Minute Hate!

[They all leave the museum]

[ends]
