It's World Homeless Day, and I'll just say: Homelessness isn't some great unsolvable mystery. People are homeless because they don't have homes. This suffering persists not for lack of solutions, but because enormous wealth and power are invested in maintaining the very structures that produce it.

Literary agents are also concerned that publishers might paste manuscripts into LLMs to generate rejection letters and publicity descriptions. Some are now adding protections to prevent that. More on the AI turmoil at some of the Big 5 publishing houses here: www.wired.com/story/book-p...

Book Publishers Are Quietly Using More AI. Staff Are Revolting
Workers at three major publishing houses tell WIRED that LLMs are being used for publicity, cover art, back cover copy, and emails, as some execs push junior staff to champion the tech.

interesting that conservatives were militantly “we must reward hustle” when the target was affirmative action at elite universities and now, when faced with the success of south asians and other groups, it is “i think we are too meritocratic”

You have to accurately assess the problem to create proper solutions
Screenshot of article which reads: Partisan polarization is not the greatest threat to American democracy.
It is a vivid and identifiable symptom of the real threat. And it is a popu-
lar frame because it blames no one. But because political polarization is
a symptom, and not the root of the problem that ails us, “fixing” polar-
ization will not restore American democratic health.

One more time for the cheap seats in the back!
Screenshot of article which reads: Democrats
and Republicans in the 1950s could agree on many things, as long as
they also agreed that Jim Crow oppression in the American South was
acceptable and that women belonged in the home. Once they started
disagreeing about these things, and especially once they were no longer
the only people allowed in the room, U.S. politics became significantly
more contentious. Not everyone wanted to peacefully extend power to
previously marginalized groups.

I admire Schwarz's deep, and deeply unsentimental, dedication to his craft and to the traditions of working people who did it (and still do it) mostly because they had to. I'm not sure if this will help me think about making books in any new way, but it feels significant for me right now.
The craft of woodworking is not a religion. The craft does not care if you use dirty words or pious ones. There are no prayers that are part of the craft. There are no spiritual requirements to become proficient at it. You will not be a better woodworker if you use fewer (or more) cuss words or keep your pants on in the gardening aisle at Walmart. You can be a craven criminal, a priest or both and still be an outstanding or pathetic woodworker.
I’ve read enough accounts of historical shops to know that the workshops of the past were just like the shops of today. They were filled with pious people and ribald ones. Drunkards and sober individuals. Predators and decent human beings. Just like the place you work right now.
The craft is not a self-help group. It has become common today for some
individuals to associate the craft with therapy or spirituality or a connection to a nature goddess. These associations do not come from the craft. Instead, they have been grafted onto the craft by people with an agenda (maybe good; maybe not).
We might experience emotions or feelings in our bodies as we perform the craft. But the craft doesn’t create these emotions. We do. And the craft does not give a single crap about our feelings.
The craft is bigger than all of that.
So then, what does the craft demand? 1) An understanding of its essential tools, materials and processes; 2) a commitment to repeating them until they are internalized and performed competently; and 3) a level of competence that allows its knowledge and skills to be taught to others.
And no more.
The craft welcomes you. And it begs you to find your place in it. To unearth a little bit of its history, embrace it and share it with others before we are drowned in a sea of plastic and petroleum by-products.
