So much of our higher ed/training stuff seems to envision 18-24 yo getting their first job and then just...that's it, end of thought process. Training people - in fact forcing people - to only have the option of manual/physical work & not having a "what to do if you get old/injuried" plan is cruel.

things have been a bit chaotic lately, and i've been away from social media for a while, but as the clouds are parting a bit, i'm glad to share this catalogue that i recently worked on for a show at the National Mining Museum Scotland -- i think my first ever publication in the form of a book!
cover of a catalogue booklet for "Jason & The Coal Mining Adventure: New Work by Jason Wilsher-Mills, by Ray Lafferty, Carlisle Yingst, & Bruce Sutherland." The background is a series of neon-bright rings around a stylized image of a coal miner with a bright mining lamp on its helmetback cover of the catalogue: "Published to accompany the exhibition Jason & the Coal Mining Adventure, this catalogue explores the work of Jason Wilsher-Mills MBE. At its heart is Wish You Were Here, a monumental tapestry inspired by the experiences that shaped the artist's childhood in a Yorkshire mining community. Commissioned, together with the accompanying film, through a major Arts Council England National Lottery Project Grant, and presented at the National Mining Museum Scotland with support from Creative Scotland, this tapestry is shown alongside several of Wilsher-Mills' inflatable sculptures, many created through his longstanding engagement with disability communities. Together, these works explore themes of love, humour, family, resilience, memory, and solidarity. Although they extend far beyond mining history, they remain deeply rooted in the people and stories that shaped the artist's imaginitive world--connections that resonate strongly with Scotlands former coalfield communities." With logos of the NMMS, the National Coal Mining Museum (England) and various funders (Arts council England, Creative Scotland).

One of the theses that is emerging as I write this book on Great Man history is that modern elites, who are provably attracted to it, view themselves not just as potential Great Men but as the *last* Great Men - not just as powerful but as the final form of power. Which should scare us.

to me

Dear Nathaniel Hensley,

I recently discovered Bedtime Stories for Weird Kids: Original Horror Tales from the Podcast A Scary Home Companion, and its wonderfully strange combination of creepy, bizarre, and unsettling horror immediately stood out to me. The collection’s imaginative range—from a house with a sinister appetite to a dream demon, a mysterious tree, an accursed scarecrow, and an unusual Christmas showdown—creates the kind of reading experience that invites readers to explore different forms of fear, dark humor, imagination, and the unexpected.
