What would you write if you had to combine a reluctant sorcerer, the end of the world, and an unopened letter into a short story? Or a box of killer wasps, the north pole of the moon, a sentient lump of yogurt? Those are not the prompts that ended up in this anthology. But they could have been. 🪐📚💙

Garner's Red Shift. I still love this book and was obsessed with it as a teen but it SHOOK me the first time I read it. The timeshifts. the multiple timelines interweaving and connecting, the traumatic darkness of it... It did something to my writer and reader brain that left a mark.
Alan Garner's Red Shift. Cover is a moody, cloudy sky behind an ancient tor on a hill. The sun shines through a window in the ruined tor.

Good article from Gothamist about Urban Swim, an open-water swimming organization run by two friends of mine. I do photography for some of their swims, but the pictures in this article are by the very talented Paul Frangipane, Urban Swim's other regular photographer.

Speaking of ebook deals, @qntm.org's "Valuable Humans in Transit" is on sale for $0.99 currently (only in the Amazon Kindle store, alas). I haven't read this one yet, but their "There is no Antimemetics Division" impressed the hell out of me.

Ted Cruz does have a point. For example, I recently told a number of people that on the morning of September 11th, I wrestled Godzilla to the ground and gave him an atomic wedgie, but it was 25 years ago and the details are a little blurry. It may not have happened exactly like that.

Second, watching "Wasabi" in Paris, at a time when sushi restaurants were new in France. Jean Reno uses his fingers to scoop up a generous helping of wasabi from the pot on the table, obviously about to eat it raw. Collective gasp from half the audience, followed by nervous laughter from everyone.

It turns out the Booklens tool by “Citizens for Decency” will happily invent reviews of non-existent books. It’s most likely just generating random text, rather than doing any kind of lookup whatsoever. It’s probably a fake designed to drive traffic to their domain. Nothing to see here, folks.

My favorite Knights of Malta fact is that they have a Magistral Villa in Rome which has extraterritorial status (i.e. it's a bit of sovereign Knights-of-Malta territory on Italian soil), and the keyhole of the gate frames a perfect view of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City.
The distant dome of a large church, framed by trees and seen through the narrow opening of a keyhole.

Technically, it's an Explanatory Note published by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of Faith and there's a lot of complicated church language. Reduced to its essentials, though, Leo's message can be effectively summarized as "We Don't Need This Fascist Groove Thang".
