"The current level of political animosity is exactly what one would expect to see if an extremist faction attempted to rescind the hard-earned rights of the vast majority of the country’s citizens." There are not enough exclamation points to convey how I felt reading this paragraph
Screenshot of article which reads: From this perspective, the “both sides” frame falls apart. The prob-
lem is not that the parties are divided. The problem is the existential
threat that a reempowered ethnonationalist strain poses to pluralistic
U.S. democracy writ large. The current level of political animosity is
exactly what one would expect to see if an extremist faction attempted
to rescind the hard-earned rights of the vast majority of the country’s
citizens. The only way to re-oppress most of a country is to use anti-
democratic and authoritarian tactics. And the only way to oppose those
tactics is to push back as a population and clearly reject them. This is
the argument happening in the United States, and its pathology is not
anger—it is the movement to undermine a generation of rights.

It’s simply not true that “no one has a good answer on what to do with rapists.” In fact, there is a depth of feminist scholarship on exactly this subject. It’s just that people won’t engage with it seriously since none of it says “nah you gotta be nice to the rapist cause that’s your buddy.”

I also think it’s ok for every victim to never ever trust anyone who did something like this ever again. actions have consequences. I am more interested in how to protect victims than in how to rehabilitate abusers

Octavia E. Butler described Toni Cade Bambara as "probably incapable of sitting back and saying, 'Someone ought to do something about that!' whatever 'that' might be. She just goes out and does it." Like Bambara said, "The most effective way to do it, is to do it."

It's hard to tell which is weirder: the fact that these guys seriously suggest that models like Claude have consciousness/sentience or that they actually invest time and money (weird!) trying to convince the Pope as well as theologians and legal scholars of this belief.

All because they laid off the long-time, underpaid and under promoted woman who knew how to do literally everything using her weird custom Excel sheets and hired a bunch of unskilled bros because they "fit the culture."

This is like I was saying the other day how it is a norm in the VC world to hire college dropouts (and encourage people to dropout) so that tech workers are easily malleable and not curious or knowledgable of the harms they are participating in.

Every person who supports a liberal "centrist" over a more progressive candidate is simply outing themselves as conservative. Trans people: I have fewer human rights today than I did five years ago. Liberal: But if I don't vote for the transphobic "centrist," *my* rights get taken away too.

If the systematic removal of our rights and freedoms doesn't matter enough to you to push candidates back towards equal opportunity for everyone to succeed, then what are you even doing here. None of us are free until all of us are free.

A question I often ask is "Is this technology that I use working for me, or is it working for someone else?" Social media pretends to work for you, but actually works for someone else. Even some software you paid for keeps trying to sell you things: you wanted a tool, but it's really a storefront.

I really do think tech crossed a line at some point between "helping you do the things you want to do" on the one hand, and "helping you do the things tech wants you to do" on the other. At this point, we're all contorting ourselves to live how the tech industry thinks we should be living.

feeling this hard -- i am so glad that there is an actual conversation that's taking place around cornell, and that survivors coming forward isn't being dismissed as 'woke 1' or whatever the fuck. and it's also hard to ignore that we've been here before, in the recent past, and nothing changed.

Seeing people post about how unfair the “mob justice” against the Cornell rapists is doesn’t really move me when there is no justice for survivors. The system doesn’t work; it enacts further punishment on the victims. Society is even crueler. So spare me the “mob justice” rhetoric about the accused

Women and girls know the ways in which their lives are secondary (or lower) to those of boys and men. When people say they don’t want these young men’s futures to be ruined, what they’re really saying is it’s okay for young women’s future to be destroyed.
