Apparently, it's #WorldLionDay! A magnificent lion head carved from mammoth ivory some 40,000 years ago. Although small in size (H. 2.3 cm), it exhibits remarkable detail. Found at the Vogelherd Cave, located in the Swabian Jura region. On display at Landesmuseum Württemberg

Carved head of a beast. From the #VikingAge Oseberg ship burial of two women. It is one of five unique carved animal heads from the womens’ richly-furnished ship grave. AD 834. Norway. 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows an ornately carved wooden head of a beast-like animal with a long wooden neck. Excavated from the Viking Age Oseberg ship burial of two women. The creature has a rounded snout with flared nostrils, a wide open mouth, and large, bulging eyes that give it a fierce expression.

The surface of the head is covered with exceptionally fine carvings. The back of the head is covered with interlaced ribbons and animals, and the top of the snout is ornamented with a cross-hatched pattern. The decoration is so dense that almost every visible part of the head is textured. The features are stylized rather than natural, creating a powerful guardian-like figure that reflects a high level of Viking craftsmanship. The long neck is smooth wood except for a geometric band around the bottom, not seen in my photo.

The Oseberg Viking ship burial of two women contained five of these unique carved animal heads, the exact function of which is unclear. Each head was found with an iron rattle attached to a rope, and some of the ropes ran through the mouth of the beasts.

I saw this artefact in 2018 at the former Viking Ship Museum in Oslo which has now closed. It is being redeveloped and will open late 2027 as the Museum of the Viking Age

#Bugsky 🐙🌿 Shared with me by a fof in SoCal - this is a gynandromorph (both male & female) valley carpenter bee (Xylocopa sonorina). Females are black, males orange, so the extreme color dimorphism really stands out. Per Doug Yanega at UC Riverside, bee gynandromorphs he’s seen are mosaic instead—
A photo looking down on an unusual bee clinging to a green shirt. The bee is a stout bee called a carpenter bee, but what’s unusual is that it is both male and female, known as a gynandromorph. In this particular species (Xylocopa sonorina), females are jet black and males are fuzzy orange. This one has an abdomen that is divided into four perfect quadrants, like a checkerboard, alternating orange and black. The thorax is mostly black but with some orange.

I’m in love with the Stargazer, from the Early Bronze Age (ca. 3000 BCE). She’s made of marble and is likely from western Anatolia, and now at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
A small marble statuette from the front. “Executed in translucent marble this is one of the oldest sculptures of the human figure in the museum. The incised triangle at the pelvis indicates that this is a female figure. Her head is sculpted fully in the round while her body is reduced to an elegant profile. The figure's meaning and context are unknown, though it probably carries religious connotations related to fertility and abundance. This Kilia-type figure, named for an excavation site in what is now Turkey, is one of about 30 such figures known, and is especially rare because it is complete. She is a "stargazer" because her eyes look to the stars above, home of powerful divine forces.”The same statuette from the side. The same statuette in partial profile. The same statuette from above. She is looking up.

Alexandra Winteraven writes about the sacred feminine, the Earth, and the wildness of women, wherein beauty and terror inhabit one body. "a living earth includes rot, parasites, mothers eating their young. it includes storms that do not care about your nervous system." substack.com/@alexandrawi...
even inside matriarchy discourse, earth keeps getting turned into the Good Mother.

sigh

she provides, nourishes, heals, protects. she offers beauty, awe, medicine, food, air, water, life.

yes. and.earth is not a tradwife with moss in her hair.

a living earth includes rot, parasites, mothers eating their young. it includes storms that do not care about your nervous system. it includes fungi digesting what died, tectonic plates grinding the world into a new shape, rivers taking whole houses because water follows force, not human sentiment.

it includes beauty and terror as one body.when earth only gets named as mother, healer, nurturer, provider, we are still inside the same gendered assignment. feminine equals care. feminine equals nourishment. feminine equals endless giving.

that is still essentialism.

and it does to earth what it does to women: reduces an alive, unruly, dangerous, intelligent force into something useful, comforting, and morally clean.

earth is sacred.

earth is relational.

earth is also feral as fuck.

Wonderful Ice Age art! Some 40,000 years ago, this tiny head of a cave lion was skilfully sculpted from mammoth ivory. It is one of the oldest known works of figurative art! 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows the left side profile of a head of a cave lion skilfully carved from mammoth ivory some 40,000 years ago (Aurignacian culture). Carved details include muzzle, nose, eye, raised ears, and cross-hatching on the neck to indicate a mane. The ivory is a light creamy brown in colour with a surface sheen, and darker patches caused by time spent buried in the ground. It is displayed against a dark background. The head measures 2.95 cm in length x 2.11 cm in height. On display Landesmuseum Württemberg Stuttgart.

“Sin, young man, is when you treat people like things. Including yourself. That’s what sin is.”

“It’s a lot more complicated than that - “

“No. It ain’t. When people say things are a lot more complicated than that, they means they’re getting worried that they won’t like the truth. People as things, that’s where it starts.”

“Oh, I’m sure there are worse crimes -“

“But they starts with thinking about people as things…”
