First quarter final match of the #BiscuitWorldCup today - chocolate digestives v. Jezyki. Obviously chocolate digestives rolled it home, but what a match! Some inspired play from Jezyki - weak on the dip, but intriguingly, a little bit like a lion bar. At the end of the day, not quite biscuit enough

Our new paper out now in QSA models the Storegga tusnami wave using more realistic palaeobathymetry based on the most recent glacio-isostatic modelling outputs for the North Sea, and shows that significant wave propagation south of Dogger Bank is extremely unlikely.

It always slightly frustrates me that I can never find a comprehensive, georeferenced map showing the toponymy of seabed features, but this snippet from the BGS memoir captures some of the best ones north-east of Norfolk. webapps.bgs.ac.uk/memoirs/docs... (Figure 121, Cameron et al. 1992)
A chart of the Norfolk Banks running sub-parallel to the coast, showing the names given to them by people navigating those waters; from north-east inwards towards the coast, these are:
Indefatigable Banks
Swarte Bank
Broken Bank
Well Bank
Inner Bank
Ower Bank
Leman Bank, with Haddock Bank to it's north-west
Smith's Knoll
Winteron Ridge
Hammond Knoll
Haisborough Sand

Well, some real shocks during the group stage of the #BiscuitWorldCup - bourbons didn't make it through! Good to see plucky newcomers Jezyki qualify

New archaeological excavations & dating at Widgingarri Shelter 1 in NW Australia shows human occupation by ≥55 ± 4 thousand years ago, including abundant stone tools and use of hematite - one of earliest sites in all of Sahul 🇦🇺🦘🏺 #archaeology Open access: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
Figure 6 from the article showing line drawings of select stone tools anotated with percussion direction and angle.

Caption reads as below:
Examples of cores recovered from WS1, including cores-on-flakes (a–c), multiplatform cores (d, e) and a bipolar core (f). Areas shaded in blue represent ventral surfaces and/or striking platforms of the original flake blank of core-on-flakes. Arrows indicate the direction of complete (i.e. containing both proximal and distal ends) and partial scars, with the former marked with a circular marker at one end.
Show detailed figure description
The figure displays six panels (a to f) illustrating various stone artefact core shapes and their features. Panels a, b, and c feature multiple views of larger rocks with prominent blue surfaces, alongside outlines and a 5 cm scale bar. Panels d, e, and f present smaller rocks outlined in gray, with scale bars of 3 cm for d and 1 cm for e and f. Each panel reveals knapping scars and structural details, emphasizing the diversity in shape, texture, and surface features across the rocks.

By popular demand (well, two people asked), here are the qualification rules of the #BiscuitWorldCup
A screen shot of the rules of the Unit 5 Biscuit World Cup, which reads as follows:

UNIT 5 BISCUIT WORLD CUP – The Rules
1. Only Biscuits that are found in the biscuit aisle of a normal supermarket can enter the Biscuit World Cup
2. Weetabix are not biscuits and are not found in the biscuit aisle, and therefore cannot enter the biscuit world cup.
3. Jaffa Cakes are found in the Biscuit aisle, and therefore DO qualify for the Biscuit World Cup.
4. A sensible Biscuit Aisle. Not Aldi. A hoover is not a biscuit.
5. You may not make up biscuits (there is no such thing as a Chicken tikka digestive biscuit).
6. Crackers are crackers not biscuits, except when they are crisps.
7. Biscuits from overseas are allowed IF you can buy them in this country.
8. No homemade biscuits. This is a professional tournament.

I want to add that Dolly wrote this song less than a decade after eugenicist Harry M. Caudill's Night Comes to the Cumberlands was published, pathologizing Appalachia during the country's "War on poverty." That "Despite your contempt, the things I love are worth loving" part runs DEEP.

Delve beneath metres of peat & silt and explore land surfaces contemporary with the creation of the North Sea.
