New trial of retatrutide (triple agonist, building on GLP-1s), shows 25% weight loss in the highst-dose group. 25%! Just a few years back, a trial with 10% weight loss would have been big news. These drugs are the biggest public health boon since antibiotics and vaccines.

The prevailing narrative is "Big Food created an obesogenic, unhealthful food environment! It's THEIR FAULT!" This is largely true. But we're the ones who fall for stupid fads, look for magic foods, demonize macros - so we get the products to match. We are not so much victims as co-conspirators.

Can you think of a way the food environment has *improved* over the last couple of decades? Can be about health, price, environmental impact, animal welfare. My pick: fewer laying hens are in tiny cages, and there are eggs from pasture-raised hens in every market.

ICYMI (I did), this paper pits semaglutide against semaglutide + bimagrumab (a drug designed to increase muscle mass). At the highest dose: Body weight decreased 22% Fat mass decreased 46% Lean mass decreased 3% Those are crazy numbers. Almost scary. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

This is the nail in organic's coffin. Yes, it has benefits! I support it as a agricultural niche for those beneftis. But the yield penalty is generally 20-50%, which means you need 25-100% more land to produce the same amount of food. Organic cannot feed the world.

Update: I chunked up the lion's mane mushroom and roasted it and it tasted like ... nothing. So I stone souped it - added garlic, sausage, wine, stock, cream, and parsley. And pasta. And of course it was tasty. But I gotta say I am not a big fan of this mushroom.

Excellent news! The blight that wiped out American chestnuts kills the trees by producing oxalic acid, which the trees can't metabolize. Wheat can, and introducing one wheat gene gives the tree the ability to withstand the fungus (so far!). I'm a huge fan of this project.
