The accounting is in: In Oregon there are 111 data centers. The TOTAL number of people employed at data centers is just 2,630, or 0.1% of the labor force. Those 100 data centers consumer 23% of all electricity used in Oregon. Meanwhile, electricity rates skyrocket as more centers are built.

Jennifer Nelson’s entry to this year’s Minnesota State Fair crop art
A localized version of Guernica with a loon at the center and a person holding an ICE OUT sign

“My piece was inspired by Picasso's Guernica, a work that was his response to the Nazi's bombing of the Basque town. I thought there was a fitting parallel between these incidents about the high price paid by ordinary people when aggressive regimes try out new tactics of war, as well as a fitting juxtaposition of the darkness of living such an experience and the light we shone through it in our own resistance and care for one another. The patterns near Renee Good and Alex Pretti’s mouths are actually their last words in Morse code: ‘I’m not mad at you,’ and ‘Are you okay?’”

AI is making us stupid, or making those who started that way stupider. From Mike Allen's Axios product
Al has become my reading buddy as I've plowed through my summer book list, helping me keep track of plots and characters, unpack themes,
and make sense of wordy, old prose, Axios' Nicholas Johnston writes. • Why it matters: The way many of us actually read books — a few pages before bed, a chapter at the beach, another on a plane - makes it easy to lose the thread. AT can help you pick it back up without
starting over.
Ш I really got into using AI while reading James Fenimore Cooper's "The Last of the Mohicans." The text was far too dense for casual vacation reading. My first prompt asked:

My grandmother had a saying: "And Magda Goebbels made a great strudel." For years I didn't understand it, until my mother explained that some glossy magazine once ran a puff piece on Magda Goebbels - Hitler's propaganda queen - complete with her strudel recipe. My grandmother, who despised the Nazis with every ounce of her soul, used it as shorthand for the way media will sanitize evil by focusing on something trivial, domestic, or charming while ignoring the atrocities staring us in the face.

How long is a million seconds?

First, let me ask you a question: How long do you think a million seconds is? In terms of days, weeks, years, decades, or whatever.

Turns out it's 11.5 days. That's it. Less than two weeks.
How long is a billion seconds?

Now, how about a billion?

A billion seconds is 31.7 years.

So a million seconds ago was last week, and a billion seconds ago was 1993.
How long is a trillion seconds?

Okay, last one. How long do you think a trillion seconds is?

A trillion seconds is 31,689 years.

A trillion seconds ago, humans were still in the Stone Age. Writing hadn't been invented. Agriculture hadn't been invented. We were hunter-gatherers using basic tools.

Student: “How did he get that much money?”

Student: “So those companies make huge profits?”
Me: “Oh gosh no. They all lose billions of dollars a year. All of them. Huge losses.”
