Okay. Last October 2 I covered my first Flyers preseason game for @phillymag.com. 367 days and 200 pages of typed notes later, here's the second part of my very #longread, which is a bit more personal than last year's story. www.phillymag.com/news/2026/09...

A fun thing I learned from this story is that Philly's two largest robot dog companies were both founded in 2015, the same year that Philadelphians violently destroyed HitchBot.

I understand that flights are expensive right now for the reasons that we all know, but I just looked up a mid-week, mid-November Philly to Charlotte flight for work and it costs $868. Eight hundred and sixty-eight dollars! Seems impossible to go on like this.

phewww Trump at -29 in Pennsylvania, down from -19 just a month ago
inquirer.com
Pa. voters are more critical of Trump’s handling of the economy than they were a month ago
Most of Pennsylvania's likely voters disapprove of President Donald Trump's handling of gas prices. Will Republicans have to answer for that — and more — at the ballot box this fall?

"In addition to cutting his prison term short, the commutation erased Dougherty’s obligation to pay about $1.6 million in restitution." will be interesting to monitor Doc's political donations in the coming cycles
inquirer.com
Johnny Doc was a longtime Democratic power broker. But his ties to some Republicans helped free him from prison.
John Dougherty asked President Donald Trump to commute his sentence and backers included former Council candidate Daniel Pellicciotti, former U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta and former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum.

One weird Trump thing that you wouldn't know unless you're a journalist is that the press releases from the DOJ and other agencies have gotten increasingly political and silly. In the past they'd send them for big stuff: criminal conspiracies, drug trafficking, etc. Now it's petty stuff like this:

Anthony Jeselnik summing up the Trump years in one sentence.
NY Times interview:

Why do you think men don’t read fiction?

This is a question that fascinates me. I think a lot of men view reading fiction as a frivolous waste of time. We’ve been conditioned to ignore the benefits of empathy. I think it’s a marketing problem. Reading should be sold to men like lifting weights for your brain. But it’s not just men. People who are happily staring at their phone all day don’t want to pick up a book. Their attention spans are fried. But I’m hoping the fall of literature is just a trend. Trends can be reversed.

It’s hard to imagine any other beat in any other US city being covered as obsessively as the Philly sports media covers the Eagles. But is that coverage actually good? And is it good for Philly & its residents? Tom McGrath takes a smart look at those questions at @phillymag.com & isn’t so sure.

The details in this story are absolutely insane: "Just 9% of the school’s students meet state standards in reading, and 5% reached math standards." Charter schools are a total scam not only for taxpayers but also the communities they claim to support.

This nonsense clearly has an audience of one, but beyond that can we acknowledge that there’s no way this is true? There are 13 million people in the state—more than 4 million in Philly and the burbs, 7 hours away—and you’re saying one out of six PA residents goes to ERIE every year? Come on man.
