Yes, our sense of smell helps us keep a dividing line between a world of AI and a world where people matter, because AI STINKS 🦨

"Anthropic leaders to control AI lab via 'Founder LLC' to promote the common good" www.reuters.com/legal/transa.... If only Elinor Ostrom was still around to explain to these AI doomer numpties that 'common good' is something we decide _in common_, not via a cabal.
screenshot from linked Reuters piece which reads: "Sept 28 (Reuters) - Anthropic has long positioned itself as the virtuous AI company. An early look at its IPO filing shows how it is creating a new "Founder LLC" vehicle aimed at serving the common good, while insulating its leaders from market forces.
The new LLC will be made up initially of Anthropic's seven co-founders including CEO Dario ‌Amodei, individuals who are "distinctly equipped to be stewards of our mission," according to a copy of the filing, seen by Reuters. Anthropic's mission is to benefit humanity through responsible AI."

The people's occupation of Puerta del Sol in Madrid continues to grow in size and ferocity. They know the real invaders are not working class immigrants or people of color, but vulture funds, landlord parasites and transnational capitalists who drive workers from homes and suppress wages.

TFW you publish a preprint about ways to decouple society from the infrastructural collapse prefigured by AI only to discover that the preprint server is already being knocked out of action... 🙄
Screenshot from CERN's preprint server at https://zenodo.org/ saying "Zenodo is currently experiencing slowness and intermittent outages due to heavy automated traffic from bots and AI crawlers. We are aware of the problem, and our team is focused on stabilizing the service. Thank you for your patience"

This episode of @melhogan.bsky.social's The Data Fix w/ @eryk.bsky.social is the most grounded discussion of so-called 'rogue AI' I've come across podcastaddict.com/the-data-fix... The algos aren't 'planning' or 'conspiring' but blindly following imitative but meaningless streams of generated text.

The Data Fix - Rogue, with Eryk Salvaggio
Listen to The Data Fix - Rogue, with Eryk Salvaggio by Mél Hogan on Podcast Addict. When is AI 'going rogue' and when is it just sloppy oversight by the companies designing the models? The answer won't surprise you -- probably -- but in this episode we discuss why we can both not believe the doom-hype marketing hype of AI companies and still be a bit worried about where this is all taking us. New preprint from me: 'Beyond AI: Infrastructuring the Common Good'. The paper treats AI as diagnostic of deeper contradictions, and argues that convivial practice can reclaim vital systems from the collapse of the technopolitical regime. doi.org/10.5281/zeno...
Screenshot of paper title and abstract. 'Beyond AI: Infrastructuring the Common Good': "Rather than taking AI as a central focus, this paper treats it as diagnostic of deeper contradictions. AI intensifies extractivism while being unable to deliver on its promises, and its rampant scaling of energy and resource demands heralds a form of ‘total mobilisation’. This paper proposes decomputing as a programme for pushing back against such technocratic nihilism. Decomputing adopts a degrowth framework and advocates for reclaiming agency through deautomatisation and people’s coun- cils, in order to develop convivial alternatives that centre an ethics of care. It is a philosophical and tactical response to the wider crisis of care induced by the collapse of existing systems..."

Fisher/Jameson said "It's easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism". And yet, that act of imagining alternatives is urgent; if AI tells us nothing else, it tells us that capitalism is actively imagining the end of us.

Great denunciation of Thiel et al., but many such critiques of fascism miss the element of mass psychology that carries them to power. Tech is key here, not just for concentrating wealth, but because machinic social relations make us more susceptible to fascist solutionism.

Attempts to govern AI fail because it's diagnostic of deeper changes in the order of things zenodo.org/records/1945.... Decomputing aims instead to decouple critical services from technocratic collapse. Next week I'll post the preprint 'Beyond AI: Infrastructuring the Common Good'.

AlphaFold was always bait-and-switch; now Google confirms it. A hyper-narrow bioinformatrics model with actual science bolted on whose guesses can be experimentally checked was never a licence for socially-applied slop at scale, but it's done its job. Effort transferred to LLMs.
