Hot take: I don't think social media made people dumber. We've been dumb this whole time. It's just that you used to have to have a job that people sent their dumb letters to, to notice. This made "Engaging with fools" an occupational hazard rather than the 24/7 experience it is presently.

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

You’re right—that plane shouldn’t have gone there. That’s my fault, and I should have made sure there wasn’t a terminal in the landing path. Would you like me to call emergency services, or assist with lining up takeoffs?

Three frames from "The Matrix"

First frame: Morpheus holds two pills, the red pill labeled "career that makes you happy" and the blue pill labeled "career that drives you mad."
Second frame: Neo, who is labeled "historians", looks at the pills.
Third frame: Morpheus asks: "Did you just take both pills?"

Gavin Newsom is basically an overrated sports car. Really pretty on the outside and capable of top speeds. But the fuel efficiency is terrible. So is the handling. So is the maintenance. Looks really cool in a movie but it's completely impractical as your everyday ride. This will become clearer.

If Democrats were serious they would go straight for the jugular of the crypto industry as soon as they take power. There’s public policy reasons to do this (name a non-crime use case), but also it cuts off a major artery for Republican support and corruption.

I've said this in the past a few times, and it bears repeating: I'm convinced that most of the tech industry are sociopaths. There is no industry more committed to rationalizing mass destruction, and in our current environment, that's saying something.

A thing worth remembering is that Zohran Mamdani is not only using direct social media communication with his constituency as an undeniably successful charm offensive, but also in recognition that legacy media is *fully* captured by billionaire interests, & attempting to go thru them is pointless.

Part three of my airbender OC comic is now up on my Tumblr. Check it out if you're into ATLA/TLOK and are okay with reading a story that doesn't have Aang or Korra in it. astridellejo.tumblr.com/post/8267620...
Anouk and the other new airbenders travel on the air bison toward the Northern Air Temple in the mountains.

Anouk's Journal: The Journey to the Northern Air Temple
Midori: My heritage is Fire Nation. Well, the Fire Nation colonies.

Anouk's Journal: Midori the Librarian
Midori: My father is a civil engineer, and so was my grandfather. He helped build up the city when it was still called Cranefish Town!

Midori: I'm the third generation in my family born and raised in Republic City.
Midori: My mother is a teacher, and I'm studying library science. None of us are benders.

Midori: So imagine my surprise when I'm suddenly flipping pages, and then whole books, with gusts of wind!

Midori: I read in the paper about Daw and how Avatar Korra took him to Air Temple Island to train with the airbenders.
Anouk's Journal: Nobu the Bank Teller
Anouk's Journal: Daw
Midori: I took the ferry over the next day to meet him. I also met another new airbender named Nobu.Anouk and Midori converse as their trip continues north.

Midori (off panel): Then you arrived all the way from the Southern Water Tribe!

Midori: Since Harmonic Convergence was a global phenomenon, it makes sense that new airbenders would come from all over the world.
Midori: Who knows how many others are out there.

Midori: Oh!
Midori: This is so exciting!

Midori: I hope you don't mind that I'm doing so much talking.
Anouk (writing): It's okay. I'm not the best at conversation.

Midori (looking at her hands): I'd love to learn how to talk with my hands.
Midori: It seems like a beneficial skill to have.

[Anouk's journal is filled with her previous conversation, plus the following:]
Anouk (writing): I should introduce you to my old waterbending master. She could teach you.
Midori (off panel): I wonder if the old Air Nomads had a handsign language of some sort.

Midori: Wait...
Midori: You had a waterbending master?!

Tim Curry and Dolly Parton have taught us not only that you should be bigger, weirder, gayer, and freakier, but also that those qualities are what people will love about you. The things that make you strange and amazing are the things that will resonate with other strange and amazing people

One thing that's been bugging me today: people who claim Dolly Parton wasn't political. False. She was very political. Her art and life's work were about interrogating power + amplifying the powerless. You only think she wasn't political because she did this by example, not bullshit slogans.

Dolly Parton did what literally no techbro billionaire would even think of doing: filling her life with good deeds that make people mourn her when she dies. Not one of these assholes would even think of this, they are all right now completely and honestly baffled by the outpouring of love for her.
