To be given everything you (think) you want to see/hear/feel would be a complete anhedonic nightmare. Art is a wound and our desire is driven by what is left missing.

Obviously an idiotic post, but it does get at a very common pro-AI argument which is the idea of "personalized art." It is maybe the most fundamental misunderstanding of art possible. Art is great precisely and only because it isn't personalized.

I know it’s poor form to repost an outrage artist like Ulf, but his message that we shouldn’t fear a repeat of the Nazis but rather an imminent return of the GDR (but this time with “Arab Islamofascist” characteristics) does sum up the current terror of the large swathes of the Mitte.

The most blackpilling part of the last 10 years is that every liberal party in the industrialized ‘western’ world has embraced austerity, immigration restrictionism, and anti trans bigotry and it has objectively been a complete failure and their only idea is to just keep doubling down.

I see scientists advocate for delegating science to LLMs and agents. Maybe they're admitting defeat early. But I feel like we're willingly putting ourselves under the fiefdom of big AI companies. We stop being public servants. We stop trying to do science for humans. 11/15

Very funny that Ed Sheeran, who was so keen to co-opt and monetise Irish culture, failed to take into account how ingrained support for Palestine is in a country that has suffered from famine and genocide from its overbearing neighbour (where he was born and raised)

The problem from their point of view is that rapid decarbonization requires public, collective decisions about the organization of production, in a way that threaten capital-owners' authority over both the production process and the political system.

I should write the argument up properly somewhere, but I think this is fundamentally wrong. A decisive fraction of the capitalist class does oppose addressing the climate crisis, but *not* because it would be bad for profits. If anything, a green New Deal type program would raise aggregate profits.

The flood in Nepal shows us why the claim we can just "adapt" to #ClimateChange is so dishonest (or foolhardy): climate change will break and remake our places so we cannot live in them safely, often with sudden and overwhelming violence. There is no such thing as bouncing back.

“Nobody is losing control of an emerging intelligence. They’re redirecting their own agency to the thing they are building.” It’s a myth, a self-affirming form of sense making: they take the action to build it, but insist on describing it as if they are passive witnesses to an inevitable force.

this horrible fucking vulture is now coming for disabled women using mobility aids
screenshot of the Times on facebook quoting Kathleen Stock

"This week a video went viral of a young woman in a wheelchair at a train station, filming the laborious attempts of staff to get her chair up some stairs after the lift failed. Towards the end of the video, somewhat unexpectedly, she gets out of her chair and walks upstairs herself, saying she “had a bit of energy that day” so could do it. In another video, she films herself putting on roller skates before pushing off from her wheelchair and skating happily away, Lazarus-like.
Even severely debilitating physical conditions produce good days as well as bad. On some bad days, a person may need extra help. But when a disproportionate number of young women are insisting this applies, we need to find out what is going on.
Why do Gen Z females, apparently unlike every generation before them, have strangely unstable bodies that intermittently require support?" | ✍️ Kathleen Stock
