🌱 #roseWednesday I wish I had the ability to age as beautifully as this rose! We had a small bit of rain overnight, nowhere near enough though. Yesterday I planted lots of crocus bulbs but I am planning to plant more.

colour photo. Bear with me, there’s a lot going on. The picture centres on a little tree, maybe privet or some kind of ficus - green glossy leaves, several narrow trunks. The tree is planted in the sidewalk in front of a graffitied wall, the large tag pleasingly near symmetrical behind it, silver on pale ochre.
The pavement blocks are being replaced by concrete and a marble strip textured with bars to aid the visually impaired. A block of this barred marble is propped up on the tree. concrete and marble blocks piled tidily around the bare earth square of the tree. a little pale blue plastic tub of mortar with them. Behind the tree, a stop sign and its pole lie along the new pavement.

“A group of US hedge funds” does not, on the face of it, seem likely to be the kind of owner which would reverse decades of under-investment and tackle the coming fresh water crisis.

Colour photo. A street corner in the Kypseli neighbourhood in Athens. A flock of pigeons on the pavement near the corner, busy with something on the ground. A delivery driver with the blue helmet and storage box of the Wolt app on his motorbike, about turn left. His passage disturbed a few pigeons, straining up and to the left into the air beside the apartment blocks. One, wings out, is at the very top of the left corner, in blue and white sky, high above the motorbike.

A thing younger people tend to underestimate is how much the culture around institutional sexism and racism has changed in the last few decades. I’m not saying we’ve tipped the balance of power or anything, but the vicious old white guy backlash is a reaction to real progress.

The Metric Is Not The Mission: When The Maps Became The Territory
The Metric Is Not the Mission is a ten-part examination of how Big Tech moved from building and expanding the open internet to increasingly shaping it around its own metrics, incentives and assumptions. Across the series, the argument follows the evolution of the platform economy—from the optimism of the early internet to the growing tensions...

It's also important to understand the current moment in the entertainment industries as one in which the large corporations that run these sectors are engaged in disciplining their labor forces through mass unemployment, using the investment crunch as a window of opportunity to do so.

The Etruscan tumulus of Pisa, ca. 700 BCE. Carefully excavated in the 1990s, no remains were found in the central chamber, and is interpreted as a cenotaph. An iron trident was deposited above, and a horse was sacrificed on an altar on top, which was then dismantled and interred.
Vertical photo of an open grassy area, in the middle of which is a very wide (about 30 meter diameter) low tumulus, surrounded by a ring of standing slabs of schist. In the sky is the sun, causing a lens flare that curves upwards, mirroring the curve of the tumulus.

Campus rape is really widespread; statistics suggest a significant percent of women who go to college will be raped there; feminism opened up a good conversation about it around 2012-13; it's weird when people treated Cornell like an isolated rather than dramatic example of a pervasive problem.
