I'm wondering if it's a failure of public good provision that so many universities opt for proprietary products instead of investing in open source ones. How many development hours for R/Python/Octave would the annual subscriptions for Stata/SPSS/Matlab buy and how much could be saved down the line?

The fiscal year is over. The dying Social, Behavioral, and Economic division of NSF ended up awarding 90 total grants this year, as opposed to ~700-800 in recent past years. Source: grantwitness.org/nsf/analyses...
The graph shows the cumulative number of awards made by month across this fiscal year, as compared to the last 6 fiscal years. The line for this year is total flat until June, but then finally gets up to 91 by October. In prior years the increase starts building earlier and ends on average in the 700-800 range (with variability, last year was only between 400-500).

Randomised access to an AI patent-writing product raised the quality of drafts and compressed performance differentials among junior lawyers. However, on a subsequent task without AI tools, expertise gained from previous AI use appeared only among senior lawyers with seasoned judgement.
Figure: Estimated impact of AI access on patent drafting and redlining quality. Results are reported for all lawyers (black squares), junior lawyers under 7 years of experience (blue triangles), and senior lawyers with 7+ years of experience (orange diamonds). All estimates account for differences across law firms and adjust for slight variations in how many ratings each lawyer received.

Professional judgement comes from learning by doing, but AI has the potential to disrupt this learning process. This column explores how randomised access to an AI patent-writing product affects the performance of lawyers on certain writing tasks. Using the AI tool raised the quality of the drafts and compressed performance differentials, especially among junior lawyers. However, on a subsequent task without AI tools, expertise gains from the previous AI use appeared only among senior lawyers with seasoned judgement.

The second characterization theorem for OSP relates to the problem of mecha-
nism design under partial commitment. In mechanism design, we usually assume
that the Planner can commit to every detail of a mechanism, including the events
that an individual agent does not directly observe. For instance, in a sealed-bid auc-
tion, we assume that the Planner can commit to the function from all bid profiles to
allocations and payments, even though each agent only directly observes his own
bid. Sometimes this assumption is too strong. If agents cannot individually verify
the details of a mechanism, the Planner may be unable to commit to it.
Mechanism design under partial commitment is a pressing problem. Auctions
run by central brokers over the internet account for billions of dollars of economic
activity (Edelman, Ostrovsky, and Schwarz 2007). In such settings, bidders may be
unable to verify that the other bidders exist, let alone what actions they have taken.
As another example, some wireless spectrum auctions use computationally demand-
ing techniques to solve complex assignment problems, and the auctioneer may not
be permitted to publicly disclose all the bids. In these settings, individual bidders
may find it difficult and costly to verify the output of the auctioneer's algorithm
 (Milgrom and Segal 2015).
For the second characterization theorem, I consider a "metagame" where the
Planner privately communicates with agents, and eventually decides on an out-
come. The Planner chooses one agent, and sends a private message, along with a
set of acceptable replies. That agent chooses a reply, which the Planner observes.
The Planner can then either repeat this process (possibly with a different agent) or
announce an outcome and end th

Two papers published at ~the same time and I think should be read together: Diversifying Society’s Leaders? The Determinants and Causal Effects of Admission to Highly Selective Private Colleges academic.oup.com/qje/advance-... Identity Politics www.econometricsociety.org/publications...
Abstract
We use anonymized admissions data from several colleges linked to income tax records and SAT and ACT test scores to study the determinants and causal effects of attending Ivy-Plus colleges (Ivy League, Stanford, MIT, Duke, and Chicago). Children from families in the top 1% are more than twice as likely to attend an Ivy-Plus college as those from middle-class families with comparable SAT/ACT scores. Two-thirds of this gap is due to higher admissions rates for students with comparable test scores from high-income families; the remaining third is due to differences in rates of application and matriculation. In contrast, children from high-income families have no admissions advantage at flagship public colleges. The high-income admissions advantage at Ivy-Plus colleges is driven by three factors: (1) preferences for children of alumni, (2) weight placed on non-academic credentials, and (3) athletic recruitment. Using a new research design that isolates idiosyncratic variation in admissions decisions for waitlisted applicants, we show that attending an Ivy-Plus college instead of the average flagship public college increases students- chances of reaching the top 1% of the earnings distribution by 50%, nearly doubles their chances of attending an elite graduate school, and almost triples their chances of working at a prestigious firm. The three factors that give children from high-income families an admissions advantage are uncorrelated or negatively correlated with post-college outcomes, whereas academic credentials such as SAT/ACT scores are highly predictive of post-college success.Presidential Address: Identity Politics

We offer a theory of changing dimensions of political polarization based on endogenous social identity. We formalize voter identity as in Bonomi, Gennaioli, and Tabellini (2021), but add parties that compete on policy and spread stereotypes to persuade voters. Parties are historically connected to different social groups, whose members are more receptive to the party messages. An endogenous switch from class to cultural identity accounts for three major changes: (i) growing cultural conflict between voters and parties; (ii) dampening of redistributive conflict, despite rising inequality; (iii) a realignment of lower class voters from the left to the right. The incentive of parties to spread stereotypes is a key driver of identity‐based polarization. Using survey data and congressional speeches, we show that—consistent with our model—there is evidence of (i) and (ii) in the voting realignment induced by the “China Shock” (Autor, Dorn, Hanson, and Majlesi (2020)).
