Richard Burton and Geneviève Bujold during a break from filming Anne of the Thousand Days (1969)
Actors Richard Burton and Geneviève Bujold — both in Tudor costume, Burton dressed in a light-coloured jerkin, coat, dark-coloured breeches and wearing a dark bonnet with feather plume, Bujold in a dark structured gown with extravagant sleeves and wearing a dark bejewelled French hood — captured standing together, Burton facing the camera, Bujold in profile, both smiling toward the camera, in a full-length black-and-white shot taken in the grounds of Penshurst Place in Kent during a break from location filming for Anne of the Thousand Days (1969)

More Death from the St. Agnes Convent. Here's the centre panel of an altarpiece made in Prague between 1521 and 1525, showing Jesus saving the donor of the artwork from Death's grasp by putting them in a wristlock. My guess is Death counters the move by clocking him with that hourglass...
Votive Altarpiece from Zlíchov

Christ the Saviour

Last Judgment

PRAGUE, 1521-1525

ORIGINS UNKNOWN, PERHAPS FROM THE ST VITUS CATHEDRAL IN PRAGUE, LATER IN THE CHURCH OF SS PHILLIP AND JAMES IN PRAGUE-ZLÍCHOV

The centre of the original altarpiece used to comprise a relief with Jesus Christ saving the donor of the altarpiece from the claws of Death after an interpellation by Virgin Mary and St Andrew. On the wings were reliefs with Christ on the Mount of Olives, Christ appearing to the Three Maries, St Jerome in repentance, Stigmatization of St Francis, St Matthew the Evangelist, St Mark the Evangelist, St Luke the Evangelist and St John the Evangelist. The extension of the altarpiece was formed by a semicircled lunette with the Last Judgment, a composition based on the print by recht Dürer.

Perhaps the most dangerous hunting accidents in the Middle Ages weren't accidents at all: they were actually instances of killer rabbits hunting humans. All people from emperor to lowly peasants feared these rabbits, especially the killer Rabbit of Caerbannog (from Monty Python😊).🧵7/7
A rabbit is reloading a crossbow in the left side of the image while another rabbit on the right side of the image is carrying away a human that has been hunted. The human is hanging upside-down from a staff that is being held over the rabbit's shoulder. In the centre is a human hiding in a small tree, seemingly hoping that he won't be killed. Beneath his is another, smaller rabbit that is looking up at him in the tree.

Many thanks for letter from Mary Danby. I'm toying with the idea of sending her my 'waxwork' horror story, rejected by H. van Thal. It's certainly horrific. Expect 'Pan' will say the same as 'Fontana', but always worth trying. Beautiful, huge green dragonfly in garden yesterday.

Day 1 of spooky season and I am reminded that, in a childhood of reading deeply unsuitable horror fiction, the standout scariest was Ghosts by Ed McBain: it was one of his 100% unsupernatural hardboiled cop novels, and to see familiar characters get haunted was as scary as if it was happening to me

TO THE WOMAN CRYING UNCONTROLLABLY
IN THE NEXT STALL
If you ever woke in your dress at 4 A.M. ever
closed your legs to a man you loved opened
them for one you didn't moved against
a pillow in the dark stood miserably on a beach
seaweed clinging to your ankles paid good money for a bad haircut backed away
from a mirror that wanted to kill you bled
into the back seat for lack of a tampon
if you swam across a river under rain sang
using a dildo for a microphone stayed up to watch the moon eat the sun entire
ripped out the stitches in your heart
because why not if you think nothing & no one can / listen I love you joy is comingTattoo on my arm that reads “listen I love you joy is coming”

For National Poetry Day, Frank O'Hara
Poem [“Lana Turner has collapsed!”]

By Frank O’Hara
Lana Turner has collapsed!
I was trotting along and suddenly
it started raining and snowing
and you said it was hailing
but hailing hits you on the head
hard so it was really snowing and
raining and I was in such a hurry
to meet you but the traffic
was acting exactly like the sky
and suddenly I see a headline
lana turner has collapsed!
there is no snow in Hollywood
there is no rain in California
I have been to lots of parties
and acted perfectly disgraceful
but I never actually collapsed
oh Lana Turner we love you get up

Paddling (canoeing) across Windermere today, into the teeth of a pretty stiff Force 3 wind - lumpy, and just this side of whitecaps - I came across a swimming squirrel, looking very stressed. Not a planned swim, I'm guessing. It was 300m to either shore, so I'm not sure s/he was going to be okay.
