(pity the poor classicists who have been writing debunks of far right racist testosterone-bro ‘clash of civilisations’ bullshit for so many years. they only just finished explaining the Mediterranean is a melting pot over the Nolan movie, and now Rubio is making them do it all over again.)

And also: The Venetian and British empires did a great deal more harm to the Periclean monuments of the Acropolis than the Ottomans. And then the Americans razed an entire working class neighbourhood so they could use the ancient Agora in their culture war against the Soviets.

When the power and the money shifted, it was rededicated to Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, the Emperor Augustus’s right-hand guy who helped him overthrow the Roman republic. He was guid at building, unlike the current U.S. leadership, and he built us a nice odeon. Thanks, Agrippa.

You can see the Agrippa pedestal to the left of Rubio’s shoulder. It was originally built for a monument to a king of Pergamon, to celebrate his chariot victory in the Panathenaic games - that’s ‘thanks for spending your tourist dollars here’ in Ancient Greek

Is it infuriating that the world’s most famous fascist regime used it as a backdrop? Sure. I’m angrier with the slimy subservience of the Greek government that allowed it.

The acropolis of Athens has been bombed, ransacked for building materials and munitions, built on, and fired at. Famously, it’s had many of its most beautiful pieces pried and sawn off and shipped overseas. It’s had a swastika draped on it.

Athens has been colonised before. Those pretty sunlit columns behind Rubio have had monuments to foreign kings added to them - a couple of those are still there. The Parthenon has been a church, and a mosque, and then a different sect’s church. It’s been a house.

🚨 Latest from the border wall blockade: tree sit is still up, one land defender is locked down to machinery, Border Patrol has wrapped a Mylar blanket around them and is running the truck and pumping the blanket full of exhaust to try to gas them out, potentially killing them.

Anyone here got experience of working with a dramaturg to develop a script, especially a verbatim script? Would you be willing to talk to me about it? I am possibly looking for a dramaturg to collaborate with, but also I’d love to hear your take on the process. #theatre #theater #plays #dramaturgy

Drizzled with olive oil, here. No za’atar, just oregano. Feta. Tomatoes if I’ve got good ones. But mostly avoiding bread these years, as the rest of me doesn’t seem to like it as much as my mouth does.

Gods, I hope you’re right. I often miss when people are being funny in this way. My mother has a horror of butter, and we didn’t have it in the house, so my relationship with it is unusual. I do love toast dripping with melted butter though (a special treat available from my divorced dad).

The five habits of highly successful opposition leaders:
1 Get a popular leader, or at least one who is less unpopular than their rivals.
2 Move towards the party that defeated you.
There is usually a reason why voters picked it, which should give you a clue about what direction you need to move in.
Neutralise your areas of weakness. In our country, for the Tories that typically requires that they minimise fears that they will knacker public services; for Labour that generally requires it to minimise fears that it will spend like a drunk in a casino.
4 Convince voters that you are competent and that you've changed.
5 Form a viable programme for government.

I did. It wasn’t exactly what I thought I was signing up for, but it was interesting, seems likely to improve my skills, and it means I’m going to know people who are trying to break into/are on the fringes of the professional theatre world here. Those are my people, and they seem a nice bunch.

I went to a workshop yesterday and it was the first time I’ve been in a rehearsal studio working on skills here, the first time I’ve shown up as an actor in Greek, and one of a scant handful of times I’ve been in the same physical space as other performers since 2020.

What I have been practicing lately is that when I see something the young are into and feel excluded by their delight in it, catch myself thinking “I don’t understand this,” I add “and that’s okay, it’s a good thing, and how culture evolves”.

One thing I find endlessly funny about the rise of AI is that it has revealed that there is a large number of people who believe that the reason they wrote essays at school or university is their teachers were desperately waiting for them to provide a definite answer to “Lear: what’s up with him?”

There are so many people, so many, that love film and want to dedicate their whole lives to making films, in front of the camera, behind it, in editing suites and casting rooms and makeup trailers. And that these locusts can come in and just devour the industry, take it from us all, is devastating.

It’s a narrow rectangle with seating all along one long side and when actors cross the playing area it’s like watching a tennis match.
