Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

remember when a member of richard spencer’s entourage fired a gun into a crowd during his college speaking tour and they kept letting him speak on college campuses? it was about two months after a woman was murdered at an event he was headlining.

This by Adam Tooze is good. I’ve always found overly materialist explanations of far right voting unsatisfactory and tbh a form of left cope at times. Yes economic insecurity & loss plays a role but the driving force is simply racial resentment. It’s always best to look that squarely in the eye.

It’s one thing to be an American surviving the century of humiliation on the periphery, but actually seeing him in the flesh in the core of the empire during its boondoggle circus really drove home that we should all be fucking ashamed lol

From Wikipedia:

The purpose of a system is what it does (POSIWID) is a heuristic in systems thinking coined by the British management consultant Stafford Beer,[1] who stated that there is "no point in claiming that the purpose of a system is to do what it constantly fails to do".[2] It is used in systems theory, and is generally invoked to counter the notion that the purpose of a system can or should be read from the intentions of those who design, operate, or promote it. When a system's side effects or unintended consequences reveal that its behaviour is poorly understood, then the POSIWID perspective can balance political understandings of system behaviour with a more straightforwardly descriptive view.

It says as much about what a year 2026 is that @bloodwork.show (listen to Blood Work) got Ackerman on to talk GWOT the week DHS killed Renee Good and then @patrickwyman.bsky.social on mercenaries, violence work, and imperial decline *right before* Trump's Iran war podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/b...
But the first one is we all know the concept of the Imperial Boomerang, right? Like what happens overseas is not going to stay overseas. It will return to the Imperial Corps.
And in this incredibly hyper-connected globalized world, the distance for the Imperial Boomerang to travel is much shorter in every meaningful way. It doesn't take as long. It's not as difficult for the Boomerang to come back around and hit you because everything happens faster.
And to your point about this being a postmodern empire, it's very much a network empire is the way that I would think of it. And all empires are networks, right? Like this is now kind of de rigueur in empire studies, is that all empires are networks.

this is fucking crazy: moderates on the city council are trying to torpedo Zohran’s pro-housing appointee and after getting called out for NIMBYism, their reaction is to double down.
Even City Comptroller Mark Levine tried to level with Council members today. "It would be hard to imagine a more qualified person to lead the BSA than [Mamdani's] nominee, John Mangin," Levine, a former Council member, wrote on
X.
But the rebukes from housing groups and others may be backfiring. In response to the accusation that they are leaning into NIBMYism, even more Council members now seem bent on blocking Mangin's nomination, according to a person with knowledge of the chamber's internal dynamics who was granted anonymity to discuss them.
"He has basically declared war on the Council and really doesn't support the role that the Council plays in land use," Council Public Housing Committee Chair Chris Banks said of Mangin today, noting that he was urged by Menin's office to contact Playbook to share his perspective. "It would be suicidal for the Council to advance this nominee."

It’s embarrassing that the rabbi of Central Synagogue - one of the most prominent Reform rabbis in the US - is portraying Mamdani’s accurate description of Netanyahu as a war criminal as a sign of antisemitism. This is part of why young people take antisemitism less seriously than they should.

Anyway, if the USMNT ever want to be world class we need MLS academies to be much bigger and have way more openings for lower- and middle-class children. It's true but makes you a bore at parties so it's the perfect fact for Bluesky.

this is a great illustration of one of the fundamental insights of democracy — that there is no such thing as "the people" and that majorities are elusive and ever shifting. no election, no decision, is final and treating an election as a final decision is profoundly undemocratic.
