One thing I find endlessly funny about the rise of AI is that it has revealed that there is a large number of people who believe that the reason they wrote essays at school or university is their teachers were desperately waiting for them to provide a definite answer to “Lear: what’s up with him?”

People casually using genAI instead of their own creativity or capacity for thought genuinely feels like a huge values difference now, on a very fundamental level. We do not hold the same things to be important or worthwhile.

A phenomenal moment in the Senate. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., claims he has evidence Jack Smith went to a HAWKS game in Atlanta. Smith denies it. Schmitt declares he has busted Jack Smith for perjury. Smith, vexed, says he went to HAWKEYES game in Maryland. WATCH IN FULL, UNINTERRUPTED

Very Greek tragedy thing about LLMs is that they simulataneously provide clear evidence that writing is extremely important to cognition while they also cause people to stop doing it.

Being a billionaire must be insane. You can buy new teeth, new skin. All your chairs cost 20,000 dollars and weigh 2,000 pounds. Your life is just a series of your own preferences. In terms of cognitive impairment it's probably like being kicked in the head by a horse every day

I'm not saying it's the right thing to do, but a good decision you can make if you want a career in media is to be basically a liberal Democrat but self-hating because of some bigotry. "I would be a Democrat but they won't let me be racist enough" or such is how you get New York Magazine coverage

If you encounter a manuscript that includes references to articles that do not exist, is that evidence of fraud? Or could it indicate something else---an accident, an oversight, something innocent, not worthy of the term "fraud"? My position is that it is fraud. Here is why.

I am baffled by this stuff. Have these companies sunk so much money into AI glasses that they can't cut their losses? Are they beholden to weirdo ideologue owners and investors that they have to push unpopular products?

The one thing I can say is that I’m completely Suetonius pilled now. Tiberius tortured a man with a fish. Caligula declared war on the ocean and made his horse consul. Nero fiddled while Rome burned. They did all of this because they were insane and bad people.

werner herzog on AI filmmaking (from here www.indiewire.com/features/int...)
Q: A couple years ago at IDFA, I saw this movie "About a Hero," which is this partly Al-generated hybrid documentary that tries to recreate the atmosphere of your films.

A: The intention of this young filmmaker was never to remake any [of my films], but making something in the spirit. And I immediately said, "You will fail. It is such a stupid idea. It's phenomenally, abysmally stupid. I will not take part in it." He wanted me to explain things and have my voice in it.
I said, "You are alone. There's such a thing as free speech, which I respect. So go ahead and fail." And it is a failure, period.
It's so standardized that Al can step in because there's not real storytelling. It's mimicry of something that has happened before. And I welcome Al to replace all the idiots who are into nothing but repeating, repeating, repeating until it's ad nauseam.
When it's ad nauseam, please, please, please let Al step in and do the job.

You’ve gotta use AI because it’s the future. But also it’ll take your job. But also it’ll create a paradise on earth and solve most of our problems. But also it’ll end humanity soon. But also you’ll get left behind if you don’t use it right now.

The distracted driving discourse is already popping off but I’d just like to throw in: I’ve been an insurance adjuster for almost 13 years. When I started, we almost never saw high speed rear end impacts. Now they’re like the most common type of claim. It’s distractions, this is obvious.

Don't feel bad if it takes time for you to get off your feet. Many household names didn't achieve success until later in life. For instance, John Brown was 59 years old when he raided the federal armory at Harpers Ferry with the intent of starting a slave revolution in the South

Some thoughts on higher ed: 1) Remember, lots of college students go to some type of public college, paying in-state tuition. 2) Overall, prices have slightly declined in the last decade. Yet they were already very high, driven by Baumol's cost disease and reduced subsidies to public colleges.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: in a diner, a waitress looks over her shoulder to watch a TV mounted on the wall. A news reporter is one screen, surrounded with text that reads FOUR DEAD and DEVELOPING STORY. The reporter says, “please be advised— the murderer is still at large.” Panel 2: the reporter continues, “here’s their photo.” He gestures with his pen towards a photo next to him. The photo is a guinea pig wearing a multicolored propeller hat. Panel 3: the waitress watches the TV pensively. Behind her at the diner counter is a guinea pig in a propeller hat, seated before a plate with an entire head of lettuce. This may be the murderer in question but at this stage I’d only be speculating.
