Elizabethan playhouses were supplied by a network of tailors, merchants & craftswomen. Their names survive in records, but little is known about their lives. I’m working on new research that brings the stories of these makers & traders centre stage. Here is the project in biscuit (cookie) form. 🍪
A photograph of eight rectangular biscuits (cookies) arranged in two rows on a square white plate. The plate is framed on all sides by a trailing vine pattern in green with pops of red. The biscuits are mostly in shades of ivory, cream, yellow, and grey, with a burst of vivid red and blue in one corner of the arrangement. Moving across the top row of biscuits from left to right, the designs include: neat lines of handwritten names in an early modern parish register; a section of a hand-drawn map from 1561 featuring St Paul’s Cathedral, with street names like ‘Carter Lane’ visible in a tiny spiky font; an extract of text from a funerary monument printed in an early modern book, ending ‘So transitory is our glory’; a section of embroidery from a funeral pall featuring metallic silver armour, crossed gold keys, and two hands holding up a crown. The biscuit designs on the bottom row include: horses prancing past shopfronts on Cheapside in the mid-sixteenth century; a receipt written in early modern secretary hand, which is difficult to read; a portrait of a stern-looking women dressed in a ruff, pearls, and sober dark clothing; swirling calligraphy and dense secretary hand featuring on a will dating from 1638.

Sept. 25, 1926: Ford Motor Co. says it will permanently shift to a five-day week in which factory workers and office staff will get Saturdays off. Pay scales will be altered so employees receive about the same wages as before. A trial period showed the shorter workweek to be more efficient.

All that was Barcelona in 1847. Walls, bastions and the citadel completely intact, repressing and constraining the city, making it the densest I think in Europe housing for 200,000 people competing with factories. Outside, only farmland under military jurisdiction. Guia Cicerone

In college I’d get rides back home from a friend’s cousin who spit chew into an open styrofoam cup in the flimsy fold-out holder on the dash of his honda accord. I’d just stare at the spit rocking dangerously back and forth as we raced through the mississippi valley. feels like that all the time now

I also asked him his favorite sandwich, because I knew he’d have an answer this good.
Finally, besides making me laugh, your book made me kind of hungry, because you have a lot of really mouthwatering descriptions of sandwiches. What is your favorite sandwich?

My favorite sandwich is a white-meat turkey sandwich with Thousand Island dressing and coleslaw, and one slice of corned beef, just for the accent, with a little bit of mustard. It used to be at the Carnegie Deli. I love that sandwich with some cold potato salad and a Dr. Brown’s Cel-Ray tonic. It’s celery-flavored soda. You can find it maybe in Katz’s Delicatessen, on the Lower East Side, I don’t know. But if there’s a deli that’s worth its salt it’s going to have Dr. Brown’s Cel-Ray tonic.

TV Guide cover. (Note to youth: before the internet they sold lil books with WHAT WAS GONNA BE ON TV and it was called TV Guide)

We have bold text across the top reading "TV GUIDE" and down the left hand side is the title story: "STNG'S Patrick Stewart
THE CAPTAIN LETS HIS HAIR DOWN."
Pictured just beside is the wonderful and bald Patrick Stewart with a cutie-patoodie smile. He's wearing a white T-shirt under a black leather vest. Sir Patrick is holding his arms up overtop and resting them on his head, with one hand clasped around the others wrist. It's a real casual, cool boi pose, HE'S JUST VIBIN', Y'ALL. His biceps look swol, as the hip kids would say.
Side note, I think but I'm not certain that his brown pants are pleated, which really dates this to the 90s.
The remaining text reads, "PLUS: X-FILES, ODYSSEY, BABYLON 5 and TV'S SCI-FI EXPLOSION."
