Microsoft wants to make its data centers greener, with more gardens and native trees on-site. The company thinks these efforts will limit problems its facilities have caused for neighbors, like noise pollution and the loss of green space. Read more from @justcalma.bsky.social: buff.ly/lESSXTX

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Assuming electoral reform isn't passed in this parliament, Labour, Lib Dems and Greens should have identical manifesto proposals. They can add variations, but the core should be the same. If the three collectively win over 50% of seats or votes, they have a clear mandate for change.

The BBC news summary this morning went seamlessly from "critics warn PM scrapping triple lock would be electoral suicide" to "critics ask if PM has nerve to make tough decisions" and I don't think it's a particularly pro Burnham stance to suggest he might not be the entire problem here.

Fascism is hegemonic masculinity enacted at the level of the state.
“Fascism is male. It loves danger, dislikes chitchat, and scorns courting; because of its natural roughness, it uses its fists when necessary; Fascism is as hard as stone; a far cry from the sweet texture of candied fruit that—like the soul of a woman—hides a hard, teeth-cracking pit inside. That suffices to determine its sex. . . . In short, Fascism arouses virility against any sort of effeminateness or weakness of the spirit. It is also against the Petrarchism of poetry, the mysticism of religion, the democratization and liberalization of politics, against dandyism and leniency at school. Is there anything more masculine than that?”

Eviction of 87-year-old puts Spain’s deepening housing crisis in the spotlight
Images of Maricarmen Abascal being forcibly removed from her home sparked protests and a reckoning over the country’s soaring real estate market Images of an octogenarian being evicted from the home she had lived in for seven decades on a stretcher, flanked by protesters and police officers, sparked indignation across Spain. Hours later, people began taking to the streets. In Madrid, an estimated 10,000 people turned up on Wednesday, wielding signs that read “Shame” and “Out with the vulture funds”, to protest against the eviction of Maricarmen Abascal. From the northern tip of Spain to the south, people poured into plazas calling for a nationwide reckoning over access to housing. Continue reading...

How drawn-out saga of Manchester City’s alleged cheating came to this
Club’s ruthless approach was always at odds with their public image and this inglorious story has further to run There is no episode in English football’s history that even resembles a precedent for the epic Manchester City disciplinary drama, which encapsulates the modern game at breaking point. Here was a grand, stoic old club, taken over in 2008 by Abu Dhabi royalty and mega-funded to imperious success, then crowned serial champions by a league simultaneously pursuing charges of monstrous financial cheating. On Friday sources confirmed that saga, in which Pep Guardiola’s expensively constructed City teams won five Premier League titles and the Champions League during the years since the investigation began in December 2018, culminated in guilty findings on almost all of more than 100 charges. Our models are sporting trademark black shirts twinned with black shorts and the very latest in balaclava chic.
