Something remarkable is happening: James Talarico is running an expansively pro-immigrant campaign in Texas, a state Trump won by 14 points, speaking in Biblical terms about our duty to "the stranger." And it's resonating. That's seismic. 1/ (new piece) newrepublic.com/article/2160...

Thanks to the economy and ICE, Trump has lost Texas Latinos. And James Talarico is developing a humane pro-immigrant message that’s resonating—even in this ultra-Trumpy state.

Incredible. First Secretary Mullin claimed that DHS had identified 15,903 noncitizens on Nevada’s voter roll. Then DHS officials told a skeptical Nevada, no no no, that’s just people we flagged. Here are the names of 185 people we KNOW aren’t citizens. All 185 were citizens. DHS got 100% wrong.
When the Department of Homeland Security sent Nevada a list of 185 names last month that it claimed identified noncitizens who had been improperly allowed to register to vote, state election officials got to work.
On Tuesday, the state sent a strongly worded rebuke to the federal government: Every single person on the list was a lawful citizen.
"As for the 185 individuals, our records indicate that they were citizens," Greg D. Ott, a deputy attorney general in Nevada, wrote, according to a copy of a letter sent to Department of Homeland Security officials obtained through open records requests.
"You have provided nothing of substance to suggest otherwise."Following the meeting, Ms. Vogt sent a clarifying email to Nevada officials. "I also wanted to be sure I clarified that we did not reduce the 15,903 to 185," she wrote. "We've manually reviewed some of the 15,903 and confirmed 185 are not U.S. Citizens."
Now, Nevada officials are saying even that 185 number is wrong. They also took issue with a letter D.H.S. sent them in early September, in which the agency reiterated its initial claims about nearly 16,000 noncitizens on the rolls and pressured state officials to review each case in a letter to Nevada officials in early September.

The theory of economic regulation
George J. Stigler
The University of Chicago The potential uses of public resources and powers to improve the economic status of economic groups (such as industries and occupa-
tions) are analyzed to provide a scheme of the demand for regulation. The characteristics of the political process which allow relatively small groups to obtain such regulation is then sketched to provide elements of a theory of supply of regulation. A variety of empirical evidence and
illustration is also presented.
• The state-the machinery and power of the states a potential insurance have their more modest repast. The central tasks of the theory of economic regulation are to explain who will receive the benefits or burdens of regulation, what form regulation will take, and
the effects of regulation upon the allocation of resources. Regulation may be actively sought by an industry, or it may be thrust upon it. A central thesis of this paper is that, as a rule, regula- tion is acquired by the industry and is designed and operated pri- marily for its benefit. There are regulations whose net effects upon the regulated industry are undeniably onerous; a simple example is the differentially heavy taxation of the industry's product (whiskey, playing cards). These onerous regulations, however, are exceptional and can be explained by the same theory that explains beneficial (we
may call it "acquired"') regulation.

God and Vance at Yalemethods.) Chua was on her book tour, holed up in a Seattle hotel room after a slew of death threats. Vance had just read a copy of Battle Hymn in the Yale Bookstore. "I just don't get it," she says he emailed her. "Why is this controversial? Your girls are lucky. You remind me of Mamaw." Mamaw, a.k.a.
Bonnie Vance, was JD's gun-toting, Bible-thumping grandmother, whom he deeply respected. Soon, Vance began confiding in Chua about his tumultuous childhood. He attached a few pages of musings that would eventually become his origin story.Chua connected him with her literary agent, Tina Bennett. Three editors at Harper Collins would ultimately pitch in to help Vance whip the manuscript into shape. And three years after his Yale graduation, Hillbilly Elegy was published. The question was raised:
Did Vance actually write the book himself? In his 1960 presidential campaign, John F. Kennedy took credit for Profiles in Courage, a book that, to a significant degree, was written by his aide Ted Sorensen. JFK won a Pulitzer. Was Hillbilly Elegy, I ask Chua, another Profiles in Courage? "No, no, no," she asserts.
"JD is a great writer, a prolific writer.
They may have edited it and shaped it, but the part that made the book good was the voice." The publishing rumorChua and her husband threw a book party for Vance at their apartment on New York City's Upper West Side. The swanky guest list included former NBC anchor Tom Brokaw, President Joe Biden's future national security adviser Jake Sullivan and his wife, Maggie Goodlander (a Chua mentee and future New Hampshire congresswoman), entrepreneur Wendi Deng, and author Patrick Radden Keefe (another Chua protégé). In their toast, Chua and Rubenfeld predicted that Vance would end up in the White House.
