I guarantee you AI won’t kill us all. The claim’s a projection of reckless rich buffoons who can’t wait to be the only humans alive, openly fantasizing about a cull. Again. I’ve never been scared of AI, but the megalomaniacs forcing it on us are terrifying. I can’t guarantee they won’t kill us all.

If you ever wondered why visible light is those particular wavelengths, it's because life evolved to see in the narrow range where water is transparent

The whole thing's a mess. My books are on the LibGen/PiLiMi databases & were scraped for AI training by Anthropic/Meta et al, but I've been removed from the compensation eligibility list due to a narrower defining of class action criteria. If someone's getting a payout, it sure as shit ain't me.

It would be nice if we had a party in power that wasn’t constantly indulging in exactly the same “disabled people cost too much” rhetoric and policy as in nazi Germany - and that’s not an exaggeration

Not a word of this is wrong and yet I fundamentally disagree that research should he remade around specific missions. Plus to do so requires extensive material financial support which universities are not in the position to provide.

Disability doesn’t care how old you are. Specialist food is no cheaper if you’re 19. Employers don’t lose their prejudice if you’re 21. This is blatant intergenerational inequality from Labour. Younger disabled people of all severities deserve better. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

I'd love to live in a country where it was the students - those most impacted - who protested against staff cuts rather than it being the staff who stood in the rain while the students just posted "I'm being ripped off!!!" on social media.

1 in 6 people living in the UK were born abroad. And yet the public discussion about immigration is so often about us, and very rarely with us. Almost no one in power has interest in talking to us, very few consider us people with agency, plans, desires, aspirations. Just numbers to bring down.

As Andy Beckett has argued, recollections of the 1970s depended a great deal on how wealthy you were at the time & the now supposedly commonsense folk memory of the 70s as a uniquely awful time is a largely a product of how the rich experienced & then recounted the decade
"Very significantly for the direction of British politics during the rest of seventies and beyond, some Britons were affected by the bad times more quickly, and with more sense of shock, than others. Between 1974 and 1976, it was the comfortably off who suffered. ate their savings. The low pound spoiled their holidays. A crash -house prices fell 13 per cent in 1974, 16 per cent in 1975 and 8 per cent in 1976 - devalued their homes. The stock-market slump did the same for their shareholdings. Share dividends shrank or were not paid at all. During these years, disposable income fell considerably faster for the richest tenth of British households than for everyone else, and by larger and larger amounts the further you were up the financial scale."

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

this is btw really common in all kinds of settings, conservatives love co-opting progressive language, and the reason it works is that liberals use the language without understanding the underlying power analysis

If you see an increase in cancer diagnosis you don’t impose a wait limit on time it takes people to get assessed. You employ more cancer specialists. People are going after a disability because it’s an easy target. This is state sanctioned suffering, abuse and neglect.
