I don't wanna COUCH my words here: I know JD Vance, his eyeliner, and absent Ashley Moody are used to running away from people when things get tough because they care more about themselves and their billionaire buddies than the people they represent. But this is my home. /1

“It’s hard to admit this from a modern perspective, but historical fascism’s lust for violence didn’t make it repulsive but extremely attractive to a lot of German voters. And we are seeing similar things with the AfD today, where fantasies of violent retribution seem to be integral to campaign events on market squares…If the AfD is voted into power, one of the most highly advanced economies in the world could experience something similar to what happened in Bosnia and Herzegovina.”

JFC this is some tremendous ahistorical bullshit. Another Atlantic piece blaming the "woke left" for the actions of the right. The argument hinges on a lie: that Heritage and the voucher movement simply recognized an opportunity in the 2020s "culture wars" to push for vouchers.

This is a dreadful argument from Burnham. Empirically false - almost 6m people were granted settled status; about 4m are currently resident. More importantly panders to racism/xenophobia, and directly contradicts argument made in his speech about migrant contributions.

We're repeatedly told that asylum seekers pose a threat to the good people of our country... Reading about the threatening and violent treatment of elderly and open minded locals in Crowborough I get the impression that the real threat comes from closer to home. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026...
On Facebook and other platforms, people

attacks, petrol bombs and rape. The dossier.

Below the title, the summary text asks: "Is the victory of the AfD in Germany a dark day for democracy or a glimmer of hope for sex realists? By David Allison." As Naadir notes: this doesn’t mean that the far right has moderated. It means that the centrists have radicalised themselves and each other over years into the politics of the National Front circa 1974. Nice and gradual like, so they don’t feel too awkward about it. But that’s what’s happened here.
Why Europe's centre will hold
The 1930s are not a good guide to the politics of the 21st centuryThe Italian left points to Meloni's harsher policies on immigration and asylum as indications that she retains far-right instincts. But almost all European governments are now searching for ways to limit the flow of asylum seekers.
This is a response to growing voter unease - so arguably an expression of democracy rather than its negation.
Le Pen has been moderating her party's image for many years - shedding many of its more extreme policies and associations. In the process, she has broken with her own father, the founder of the party, and ditched plans to leave the European single currency.
