Over the last decade, there were two hypotheses: H1: the political right genuinely cared about threats to speech from the left. H2: they were using campus speech wars to impose their values and silence dissent. Today, the answer is clear, but I can't find any of the H1 people admitting their error.

The EHRC chair either does not understand the principle of rights, or has decided to gaslight trans individuals while stripping those rights. The EHCR code undermines, and, arguably in several ways, outright violates rights for trans individuals, including Articles 8, 11, and 14 of the ECHR. 1/

I cannot say definitively that we'll never develop artificial intelligence. I strongly doubt it, based on the limits of technology and our understanding of consciousness. But I can say absolutely that an LLM will never be conscious or feel pain. It's a glorified Magic Eight Ball. That's all.

The Home Office refused twice as many student visas on the first half of 2026 as they previously, while halving the % of visa rejections universities can have before they're not allowed to ti recruit international students. Are those refusals on good grounds? Oh no, not at all.
Screenshot from the FT article quote-posted.
"Vanessa Wilson, chief executive of Univesity Alliance, a group of 20 professional and technical universities, said: "This is goin to result in restructures, which inevitably results in job losses, course closures, campus closures."
Universities cite examples of visas rejecyed because applicants had previous consideree studying in other countries, or because a PhD applicant could not name course modules, even though they do not exist for such research dgrees."

Telling that Wes Streeting considers someone diagnosed with ADHD has been 'written off'. Also telling that the government commissioned a review in the face of independent reviews finding there is no overdiagnosis, just increased awareness & historic underdiagnosis of girls & women.

Diagnosing these things, ADHD in particular, is the exact opposite of writing people off. If I'd been diagnosed and medicated in my teens, I wouldn't have dropped out of university and wasted a literal twenty years of my life before starting to get myself together in my forties.

I hate this so much. The BBC should be providing good quality, good value programmes that the private market won't cover. You and Yours (which I kind of hate), Thinking Allowed and Free Thinking are exactly the sort of programming that the BBC is i) good at, ii) not haemorrhaging money to make.

It was always clear that David Goodhart's fairy tale of a struggle between rootless cosmopolitans and down-to-earth conservatives ("Anywheres vs Somewheres") was not influential because it was accurate, but because it confirmed the prejudices of right-leaning commentators. Now we have the evidence:

The Road to Nowhere: Being Rooted in a Region Does Little to Predict Support for Populist Parties or Opposition to Migration and Social Change
In his influential book The road to somewhere David Goodhart claims that a split between a majority of people who are rooted in particular places or groups (the “Somewheres”) and a minority of people...
