Federal School Vouchers Offer Little Flexibility For States
One persistent question about federal vouchers has been how much flexibility will states have in administering the program. The answer that came today is “Not very much.”

Not to sound like a broken record but the entire subtitle of my book The Privateers is “how billionaires created a culture war and sold school vouchers.” They say it themselves by the way. Christopher Rufo in particular has been quite clear that the culture war is a strategic choice

Hinojosa isn’t the only Democrat who has worked to define the issue of public education, avoiding the GOP’s framing of it as a culture war battle. Last fall, Virginia Democrat Abigail Spanberger flipped control of the governor’s mansion by promising to make the state’s schools “the best public schools in the nation,” while criticizing Republicans for “eroding faith in our public schools” and opposing Republican efforts to bring vouchers to her state. Their playbook could help Democrats chart a path forward on the issue ahead of the 2028 election.

JFC this is some tremendous ahistorical bullshit. Another Atlantic piece blaming the "woke left" for the actions of the right. The argument hinges on a lie: that Heritage and the voucher movement simply recognized an opportunity in the 2020s "culture wars" to push for vouchers.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

The NY Times has repeatedly used the phrase “to heel” in reference to Trump’s crackdown on universities, implicitly clarifying that Trump goal is to establish dominance. And what exactly constitutes this “woke” ideology in higher education?
During the meeting, Mr. Trump repeatedly complained about his administration’s failure to bring Harvard University in particular to heel. The administration has been unable to hammer out a deal with the nation’s oldest and wealthiest university, a central plank of his broader push against “woke” ideology in higher education.
