Deloitte paid its UK-based partners £1.125m. Firm has 784 equity partners. Due to self-employed status of partners, employer national insurance (ENI) is not paid on profits shared. 150,000 ENI avoided on every £1m of profits shared. Billions lost across the country. Must end this privilege.

Some v negative responses to posts about Burnham. I understand the cynicism. What I don’t understand is the refusal to wait and see and to look for the positives. Politics cannot be about perfection. It’s compromise. It’s effective communication… and persuasion. Why not be prepared to be persuaded?

This mindset is the least we deserve from a leader. Of course it has to be turned into action. But this kind of ambition and love for the country, this kind of personal but positive vision is what takes people with you. How feeble-minded Farage and Badenoch seem. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
Photo of Burnham waving to the audience in front of HOPE AGAIN backdrop Burnham was not going to die wondering. He knew he might be delivering one of the longest suicide notes in history, but he did it anyway. Because he couldn't not do it. Better to go down remaining true to his principles than being slowly airbrushed out of history like the previous six prime ministers. Failures all. Andy was prepared to burn through all his political capital right there in Liverpool, right then. Not just for his own legacy but for a country he wanted to rebuild. It was the only way he could look himself in the mirror.
Honour his parents.

Fucking hell. Andy Burnham's labour conference speech is actually rather good, despite the people dunking on Ian Dunt. Proper old-school Labour stuff, council houses, renationalising water and energy (sort of), plus finally decoupling gas and electricity prices. Devil's going to be in the details

If people don't want to pay tax to make this country function and help out the rest of society and particularly those who need help most... then maybe they should move to Dubai and stop bleating about it. Really sick to death of it.

I'm saying: I live on this planet, and remember enough real events to be able to predict consequences when a more extreme version of them happens. And unless we prevent this, we're in trouble. The best way to prevent it is to make it too commercially expensive. Tax does that. Tax the compute.

And this bubble is adding to levels of inequality multiple times those seen before the French Revolution. How do you think an army of permanently discarded people will respond to that? People who are already angry at the world. So I'm not just saying: I'm a lefty and see a new source of tax: yay!

How is it free? Because the absence of tax and overheads allows a vast investor bubble, which will burst and cause a financial crisis like 2008, when we haven't even recovered from that yet. You think the far right came from nowhere? No, it came from a financial crisis. Which we are still in.

The big risk isn't AI nuking us. The big risk? In the 80s 1-in-10 were employed for 18 months and we had riots What happens when 1-in-4 are unemployed forever? What policing could possibly contain that?

I know this sounds like a lefty saying "tax things, all the time," but nothing like AI has happened before. The societal change will be extreme, and we have to plan. And a single datacentre releases equivalent CO2 of 17000 flights to the USA, on a planet already boiling.

AI brings genuine benefits. Medical research, better understanding of complex systems. Useful. Keep that. Making 25% of us permanently unemployed and rendering pics of Fat Johnny Depp is not useful. It harms the planet and society. If it costs users money, it will stop. So tax the compute.

Just tax the compute. Datacentre? Cool. Fund your own power generation and water reservoirs, and then pay tax for every computational act your datacentre does. And we'll use the tax income to offset societal and job damage. Overnight, AI becomes something AI giants are desperate to restrict.

Burnham edges Labour closer to finally, maybe, being sane about Brexit. Over 10 years, £Billions of cost, thousands of business failures, mountains of red tape, wasted resources and lost opportunities later…. our govt may, at last, cautiously, start to be honest about the Brexit moronathon. Yay.
The Independent front page headline:

Burnham edges Labour closer to rejoining EU
After Ed Miliband tells party conference Britain's future is at the heart of Europe, ministers say it is 'not if but how' prime minister will include Brexit reversal in next election manifestoThere is growing optimism that a way back into the EU could be put to voters at the next election after the prime minister and senior ministers made it clear they believe Brexit has been a failure at this year's party conference.
When The Independent asked Mr Burnham about whether Rejoin would be in Labour's next election manifesto on his recent trip to the UN in New York, he refused to rule it out - having said a year ago when he was
Manchester mayor that he believes the
UK should rejoin the EU.
