Every time the "why should we just forgive student loans?" question comes up, the answer will always be "Because you promised them jobs & careers that would pay them off and then destroyed the economy, job market, and careers they went to school for right as they graduated and we never recovered."

The anti-medication stance is REALLY strong in the Boomer & Silent generations, and it cuts across race and class. There’s a weird “nobility of struggle” undercurrent, as if antidepressants & attention deficit meds are cheating rather than addressing the root problem of chemical imbalance.

Patrick is a stone cold freak for dropping writing this good into the intro of what is a useful, but fairly formulaic Game 2 preview format: www.baseballprospectus.com/news/article...
There’s an element to sports that sportswriters never weary of trying to capture, hacking through the kudzu of metrics and quotations to get at. It’s the paradox of a sense of overwhelming immortality, mixed with a sense of how fleeting that omnipotence is. Athletes hypnotize themselves into attaining it, fans slurp at it like a shallow oasis in the desert, writers build entire novels constructing a world to provide it. The Boston Red Sox lost a pair of games to the Washington Nationals by 15 runs around the end of June, and then seized that invincibility and held it for more than five full weeks, enjoying a run almost unparalleled in the history of baseball. It was like snorting cocaine while on a runner’s high after finding out you’d aced a college final and fallen in love, all at the same time.

Unfortunately, that time happened to be July, and by the end of September it was a happy memory. Baseball took that perfect month and chewed away at it with its sharp little teeth, as it always does, pulling at hamstrings and snapping bones. And on Tuesday, the capricious and hateful gods of baseball took it and provided it to one Ben Rice, handed him the thunderbolts to strike the heroes down. For one day it was the Yankees who were invincible, led by the league’s best pitcher and a hitter whose resting face might best be described as vague concern, even as their captain stood with his elbows on the dugout railing. The New York Yankees are now, today and only today, the greatest team in baseball. But maybe not tomorrow. The gods need fresh meat.

i see a lot of debate around this issue that takes it for granted that supporting trans rights (especially in the sports context) will hurt you electorally. it’s worth highlighting that that’s just not what the data shows.

I fucking loathed Steve Jobs but the man understood the point of being in the tech industry was to provide people with tech. And that's no longer the point of the tech industry. Now it exists to provide shareholder value somehow without actually doing what it's meant to be doing.

Initially I was frustrated with the rise of self-checkout but I appreciated how stores passed the savings on to me rather than pocket the money, fire armies of workers & make me do a job I suck at. It’s also why I’m optimistic about AI! I have been kicked in the head by several horses.

today I learned there was a 1981 movie called California Dolls about a female pair of pro wrestlers with Peter Falk playing their manager. I learned this because NHK’s airing it right now, of course. Peter Falk & pro wrestling are two things Japan cannot resist.
a lobby card featuring Peter Falk in a red jacket with Vicki Frederick and Laurene Landon on either side (also in red)same again only now Falk’s sitting in a chair with the ladies on the floor (seductively)Falk standing behind the ladies who are seated in high rise chairsall three in the ring, Falk on the bottom with the women posed above him

Australia to force social media giants to allow users to opt out of algorithm
Draft legislation enforces digital duty of care including limiting children’s exposure to misogynistic and eating disorder content Australia will allow social media account holders to opt out of the powerful algorithms pushing dangerous and divisive content into users’ feeds, part of new laws designed to boost online safety. Users over 16 years of age will be given new tools to turn off algorithm-driven content, with platforms facing fines of more than $100 million for non-compliance. Continue reading...
