Mathematical modeling indicated that most oocytes (in the adult ovary) die in the antral stage. Together, our work shows that the ovarian reserve is not simply a stockpile running down with time, but a spatially organized, actively regulated system - with much of its biology to be discovered. 3/5

The ovarian reserve shrinks >10-fold with age but the fraction of newly activated oocytes stays remarkably constant at ~14%. Oocytes occupy preferred regions of the ovary. Where they are more densely packed, more are activated. 2/5

I don't think it's the gender in my case: I tried two female postdocs (so gender-neutral:) and one male postdoc in the past. Thinking about it, swapping with my male postdoc actually worked once... Maybe some fields are now more junior-friendly than others?

I’ve been wondering about conference norms. When I can’t attend an invited talk, I offer to send my postdoc who led the relevant work; but this is basically never accepted by organisers. When I organize meetings, I’m more than happy for postdocs to step in.
